Hi all,
I only get the minimum holiday allowance of 20 days holiday (Everyone gets a minimum of 20 days paid holiday pro rata in the UK) plus bank holidays (which employers are not obliged to give as holiday paid or otherwise).
But luckily we do get the days between Christmas and the New Year off (which this year is a full week – yippee), but we're on an on-call rota.
As a small company any unexpected time-off e.g.sickness is disruptive. So we dont have any allocated number of paid sick days.
My Mum works as an admin in the steel industry and has to keep a couple of her 20 days to take between Christmas and the New Year – stingy boss or what. They even asked her to use some holiday when her father passed away recently - not v.compassionate - she is currently looking for a new job.

General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Week of January 12th- coffee, tea or milk?

In my previous job as PA to the MD, i was politly asked by bossie to get him coffee whilst in the office - even if i wasnt getting any for myself. It wasn't to much of a pain as he was only in the office two or three days a week - and it gave me a break from my desk. He also thought it best if i got him coffee for any meetings he had rather than rely on our office junior.
However in my new job (Office Manager for a small IT Consultancy - 5 employees) we all take it in turns to get the coffee, as i only drink one cup first thing I end up not making or drinking much.
I dont think beverage fetching is demeaning unless it's taken for granted and seen that only the admin can do the coffe/tea run. I feel that providing coffee & biscuits for guests gives a good first impression - especially if you serve nice biscuits.

Hi all - i've just started a new job as Office Manager in a small IT company, the office is in a managed office building - There's only 6 of us and i'm usually there on my own - what really gets up my nose is when people from other companies barge in...... and expect my undivided attention when they can clearly see i'm on the phone and/or busy. One day last week i even had to lock myself in as i wasnt getting anything done for interuptions.......
ah that feels better................. i'm glad i got that off my chest
Luckily it's only a number of people, i'm thinking of putting a note on the door saying "do not disturb", please call extXXX - it'll probably get the message across

Are thank you notes after an interview an American thing? I'm in the UK and have never sent any before or received any after bossie has been interviewing - but now you mention it i think it's a good way of reminding the interviewers about you and maybe getting your application/cv further up the pile.
Thanks for a great suggestion
Carrie

Hi,
I wonder if anyone, could give me a hand - we're moving...... yeah!
We've just put in an offer on a new property 10 miles away - I'd like to be pro-active (as i'm sure i'll end up arranging the whole thing) and write myself a list of this i'll need to do, has anyone moved offices recently and got an action plan i could borrow?

Yeah - i also get calls about franking ink, which i unfortunatly fell foul of once - our machine doesnt use ink in bottles... and i got a box of 12 bottles. I take calls for all types of office equipment, IT - hardware and software, Stationery ect.... I just tell the caller sorry not interested as we have recently taken out a twelve month contract for product service XYZ. It seems to do the trick, i also dont take calls from people who ask for the Stationery buyer, IT Buyer ect. who ever takes the call tells the caller that Mrs Diana Prince is responsible for that area of the business but she's on holiday/trainging/away from the office for long periods of time..... She's a fictional employee but it makes us laugh when she gets mail or calls.... )

Hi Everyone, I've finally plucked up the courage to reply to a thread, as i'd like to share what happens to me when team events are arranged...
I'm a PA to the MD, who has a management team of 5. I'm included in all team events, which i arrange all aspects of. Everything i organise i assume i'm invited to as the majority of events need specific numbers..... However i've recently noticed my boss organises events that tend to be evenings out with the management team by himself. I think he does it because i'm not invited..... it gets a bit annoying when members of the management team assume i have organised the event, i end up telling them i have no idea what they're on about - which makes me and my boss look bad..... to be honest i think it just a man thing and he doesnt want to put me out by asking me to organise something i'm not invited to.....
