Part of my new job is apparently going to be sending gifts to people in the Department who have babies, illnesses, deaths in the family, etc.  My boss has given me the general dollar figure to spend on each one and told me to "go wild" with it.  I just bought a personalized baby quilt from personalization.com as my first venture.  Does anyone have recommendations of other sites I could use in the future? I've used flowers.com for flowers, but for some events (such as new babies), it's more fun to receive something other than flowers or plants (that need tending just at a time when you don't have enough time to go around!).

I've just sent a bouquet of flowers from one department to a member of staff who has just had her first baby.  I ordered a basket of fruit to be sent from another department.  Myself and her closest working colleagues are going to put together vouchers so she can purchase goods for herself or the baby.

I don't use specific gift websites, as such.  I tend to use department, or specialized, stores.  Most of the prestigious stores here in London have good websites, or they often have gift departments or a personal shopper who can advise on gifts in various price ranges.  I don't know where you are based, but it's worth checking out places like that.  I've even bought items online or over the phone in similar stores in NY and Washington for our business contacts in US.

Best wishes,

Raindance

As far as baby gifts go, my all time favorite is to give books, and my all time favorite book is "Ride a Purple Pelican" by Jack Pretlutsky and Garth Williams.   It's a series of poems and has the most wonderful illustrations.  Every family I've given this book to has thoroughly enjoyed it.
