Yesterday's post regarding performance reviews prompted me to start this one.  I had my review yesterday and for the most part it went very well.  After I looked at my copy more closely after I got back to my desk, however, I noticed that I was ranked "Meets Expectations" for my attendance.  In 3 years I have taken only 2 1/2 sick days which all happened to be last year on 3 different days throughout the year - not all at once.  I think that makes my attendance well above standards (especially compared to everyone else here where I work).  We get 1 week of sick leave a year, and if we don't use it, we lose it.  This kind of makes me want to make sure I use up all five days from now on.

Two years ago I even had to cancel a week of planned vacation because something came up in our department and they just couldn't let me be gone for five whole days!

Anyway, I'm curious.  What constitutes excessive absence in your own opinion or in the company where you work?  And what's your company's sick policy?

Your company probably takes the position that if you take even one sick day it "meets expectations."  They don't care what you did in previous years.  Even if you went 10 years with perfect attendance, if you miss one day in a year you will get an ME.  Doesn't seem fair, but, like I always told my kids -- life's not fair.  If it's any consolation (yeah, I know it's not really!) the policy is probably administered equally to all employees.

Wonder,

What were the other choices?  I don't see "meets expectations" as a negative.

I too don't see anything wrong with "Meets Expectations" as a rating.  Perhaps your rater would think you were more superior if you came in early quite often or worked later on many occasions.  I rarely take my 5 sick days either, but I also rarely come in earlier than 8 a.m. and generally leave pretty close to 5 p.m.  There are exceptions, but this is 95% of the time.  Possibly your rater was considering the number of hours you work over and above an 8 hour day rather than how many sick days you take off.

In any event, it certainly couldn't hurt to ask for clarification.  There's a chance you'll get a higher rating next year if you make your point of view known.

I'm sure you're upset and reading too much into it.  Can you ask about it, just for clarification?  Will it have an affect on how your boss or her/his bosses think of you? I doubt that.  When New York City was supposed to have the "Blizard of Many Centuries" this year, I was in that Monday, but not Tuesday.  Kinda worried about my commute and I was just feeling blah, so I stayed home.  Wednesday, I went in and developed an upset stomach and a fever.  So I took a swig of Pepto and two Tylenol and continued to work.  Thursday, I was woozy in a meeting with my president because of the same fever.  Friday, I skipped lunch with the president of our company to nurse my fever.  I was SO SCARED having taken two sick days in one week!  But my boss said better that I took the time off than risk passing out at work.  You were really sick to stay home, huh?  I'm sure that staying home felt good, too.  You got some rest, watched a talk show or Judge Judy or got to read some of that book that's been sitting around.  If you ask what that meant and how it affects your employment record, I'm sure you'll find out that you are right where you need to be, career-wise.

Sometimes you just need a mental health day.  Once in a great while (like maybe once a year), I just need a "ME" day during the week.  No husband at home, just peace and quiet.  With the stress we all face day in and day out at work, it's better to take a day off once in a while than go nuts.

Wonder99, did you name yourself for DC's most famous admin of the Navy?  (If ya'll didn't know, Wonder Woman, aka Yeoman Diana Prince was an admin for the Navy during World War II).  Really curious since I'm a big WW fan.

That's one of the few disadvantages to working for a small business owner. (There's a grand total of 15 people here, including him.)  I don't get sick days.  I get one week of vacation a year, period.  I wouldn't mind an ME on an employee review (of course, we don't get those, either) if it meant I had paid sick time.  Other than that, I love my job.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my "whiny" post.  Discussed with my DH this weekend and decided I put myself up to a higher standard at the office and expect other people to meet my standards.  I came from many, many years of working in a high pressure corporate environment - Fortune 500 company - and now, by choice, am at a smaller company. Employees here pretty much come and go as they please, and I thought my consciencious attendance would get noticed.  The work ethic here is just different.  It's difficult to describe, but it's not without it benefits either!

I'll chill out about my "Meets Expectations" rating.

Note to Yankeestarbuck:  The way I picked my name is not so creative as knowing about Wonder Woman the famous admin from WWII!  I went on a cruise in 1999 and the name of the ship was the Wonder.  Wonder99 is just a daily reminder of a fabulous vacation!!
