What is the best perk you have ever negotiated on the job?

None - my roles never offered perks and I have never been in a position to request any.

I have had myriad perks over the years (in fact, I just wrote an article on this subject that will be published in OfficePro magazine, probably in the Jun/Jul issue).

I have gotten a paid vacation anywhere in the US with my hubby, stock options, flexible time (different start times, Friday afternoons off), vacation accrued early instead of waiting six months, my IAAP dues / convention attendance (including registration and travel expenses) and more.

But the most unusual perk I have gotten was when I negotiated a house cleaning service (when I had a home office). My rationale: if I were in the office, I would have custodial services and you don't want me to be distracted from my important work by a rug that needs vacuuming, do you? Smiley

I work for a hire company so get free hires on any of the range.  From gardening equipment, carpet cleaners, to mini diggers and cranes (with permission from the boss).  It's actually something I use fairly often.

We have a share option scheme, and monthly profit share (which ups my salary nicely).

The downside though is that paid holiday is accrued so you start on 20 days and work up to 25, and the same with sick pay.  The first year is all unpaid, then increments of 10 days upto the max.

Paid vacation is the law in the United Kingdom, so that's not a "perk" as such.

In my job, I suppose I get invited to parties and events.  They are work-related, but I've been to places I would never otherwise have gone and met people I probably wouldn't have met.

My very best perks came with a job I had years ago, more or less when I first started out.  I had a flat in a really nice part of town with most living expenses paid, and a few months during the year to myself.  My employer was a businessman, based overseas, and came to this country on and off during the year.  When we were working I had to be available 24/7, and we did work very hard, but it was fun.  He was an amazing person and he and his wife treated me like a daughter - albeit a working daughter.

I don't think I've ever managed to negotiate any perks but my current position has the best of any jobs I've ever had ie

free lunches
free parking (& in the city that I work, that's a real bonus!)
way above average & very generous paid leave

In another job I helped to organise conferences etc and if I had to attend those conferences I was usually put up in one of (if not the ...) best rooms. Not because I requested it but the hotel reps would always try & keep the organisers "sweet" for repeat business etc.  One of the best times was the bridal suite & ice-cold champagne awaiting my arrival ...

I've never been in a position to negotiate perks.  I can't wait to read Marie's article for next time though!

Going to resurrect this as I just discovered another perk Wink

We do a lot of event hires and the very nice guy who arranges them just got me gold circle tickets (ie right at the front) to go to the 30,000 sell out Bon Jovi concert on 25th June in Bristol.

He's also trying really hard to get me tickets to Silverstone for the F1 racing, but that one is a long shot.

Guess who is too excited to work now?

Callie,

That is lovely - enjoy!  Unfortunately the favourites always get those kind of perks here, not that I look for anything, but once would be nice!

Gee, it's the same here.  The only reason I got these was that I did the events guy a favour and then he asked me why I never ask for tickets!  I wait for people to offer because I'm too polite to ask normally , he immediately offered me the choice of three events that week and so I pushed it a bit about Silverstone and he's going to look into it for me.

He also told me not to be so daft about asking in the future!

With my guys I am a bit of a favourite as they know I will get the job done and if I can't then I will chase whoever will.  If they reward me then it's fine but I never expect favours back.

We have to be careful of accepting gifts from vendors, etc.  There is a law in the US called Sarbaines Oxley.  Don't want to violate it since it can cost you your job.

I should clarify that we supply hire equipment to the entertainments industry amongst others) and get a certain amount of tickets given to us for staff use.

We have guidelines that cover other gifts from suppliers and vendors and do have to declare them.
