No advice needed, I'm just venting. Some of my managers occasionally hire IT contractors, and for the past two days they've had a rain of phone calls from companies marketing their contractors' services. Bossies have all been out at a remote location, so the calls all roll to me. Yesterday my phone rang NONSTOP for several minutes--I'd barely finish one telemarketr call before another one called. I finally had to forward my phone to voice mail. This morning, I took one legitimate call and then the madness started again, so once again my phone is rolling straight to voice mail.

If these callers were people my bossies really wanted to talk to, they would leave names and callback numbers and messages. However, their excuses are always "we're on a WATS line, so you can't call us back" etc. In other words, it's a boiler room. We don't do business with that kind of outfit, but I don't bother making this argument; I just continue politely offering to take a message until the marketers get tired and hang up.

URGH. Give me quiet!

I have a few of those characters that raise their ugly heads from time to time.  It's almost funny after a while.  One "consultant" my boss knew from years back.  Apparently he got into consulting because he kept getting fired from regular jobs!.

What infuriates me is when they keep calling back and ask me if Bossie got the voice mail/email/message, as if I'm not doing my job.

Sometimes the really annoying ones get to the point that I recognize their number on the caller id and just let it go to voice mail.

That reminded me of a funny story from when I was growing up. There was a telemarketing company that used to just dial numbers from the phone book. We had my grandmother and my uncle living in the house with us, and they each had a listing in the phone book (they all had the same last name, so don't ask me why this was!), so we would get three phone calls in a row from the same person. After a while, my grandmother would just tell the person calling the first time that her next two calls would be unnecessary, as they were going to the same house!

I just keep repeating the phrase "No thanks, we've already got one". It works especially well if it doesn't even fit into the context of what they're selling (e.g. IT support). It's a nice feeling when they hang up on you because they realise that you are actually wasting their time.
