Is anyone else having problems with co-workers and the photocopier? I'm having a bit of a problem and need some solutions on keeping it from escalating.
I'm having a problem with my co-workers using the photocopier, then walking away after having a paper jam/out of paper/toner problem crop up. Today's was a paper jam where the paper was resting at the fuser unit (which is very hot). By pure luck, I happened to notice the paper jam light was on. As far as I can tell, we were about 5 minutes from the photocopier catching on fire - the paper was scorched and was just turning that brown/black that indicates that the paper is about to burn.
I've told all my co-workers before that if the photocopier stops working, to let me know. Obviously, that's not working. Does anyone have any suggestions to ram this idea into my co-workers brains?

If you know who it was, go to the person. Say something to the effect of "I'm not trying to be picky, but I noticed you left the machine with a paper jam. Luckly I caught the problem before it was too late, but it almost caused a fire. You see, (insert what happend), and if I hadn't been walking by and noticed it, the machine would have caught fire. Next time it jams, please come an tell me. I don't mind having to fix the problem, but I'd rather catch it before it damages the machine." Then give a sweet smile, say thank you and go about your business. It also might be wise to send out a memo explaining (but not mentioning names) what happened. Somewhere in there, put "I know I've asked you this before, but due to the circumstances, I feel I should ask again."
If you don't want to confront the person themselves, go to their boss annonomously and explain the situation. If the boss is smart, they will understand what could have happended and go the the offender themselves.

I'd have a memo sent to all staff, or send it myself, explaining just what happened and how important it is to take care of photocopier jams right away. It sounds like your coworkers aren't aware of the fire hazard but I bet if they did were would change their ways!

Ditto all the above, but add a sign over the copier that says something to the effect that a jammed copier is a fire hazard and to keep from causing a fire they need to contact you, immediately! Who knows, maybe they weren't aware of that hazard.

Where I work, leaving the copier jammed up is a hanging offence (LOL). Mind you, we don't have many employees so it's easy to find out the culprits.
If you are "in charge" of the photocopier then I would suggest emailing everyone. If the manual for the copier is at hand, then you might encourage your co-workers to use it. And a nicely printed sign over the copier is a good suggestion.
Good luck.

If something is really important (and yes, potential fire hazards are important), hang a sign or post a note where it can't be missed! Memos are very fine and good, but they rarely "stick" when needed.
This situation concerns me a little - who made your copier? I would call in a technician for a talk about how often their units burst into flames because of this little design flaw, and how YOU can avoid being a victim. (Incidently, there would be some liability on the manufacture's part, should this happen. I would think that they would be VERY interested in helping you be sure the copier does not jamb in this particular way again.)

Did you keep the piece of paper you removed from the copier? Making a sign to hang above the copier and attaching the scorched paper may make everyone sit up and take notice of the potential danger. JusPeachy

Thanks everyone. A sign went up - both on the wall and on the lid of the photocopier. Hopefully, this will reduce some of the nonsense with the photocopier.
