Hi, everyone
I am currently working as an Admin but I would like to know what your duties are and what training got you to where you are today.

Hi bro9711
At the moment I'm working as an Administrative Assistant to a Head of School and the duties I perform are specific to administration within an educational context.
Below are a list of duties that I performed whilst working as PA to the Directors of a management consultancy. Obviously this list is not exhaustive but provides a brief insight into some of the responsibilities that an admin might be expected to perform.
Assist the Director/Centre Co-ordinator in the day-to-day running of the training centre, and maintain office activities in their absence as required.
Provide administrative and clerical support to the Director/Centre Co-ordinator as
requested and to other training staff at the discretion of the Director/Centre Co-ordinator.
Work with the Director/Centre Co-ordinator to ensure the efficient and timely recording and communication of training related information. Organise and carry out the distribution of bulletins and other documentation relevant to the training function.
Use appropriate computer software to produce regular correspondence, fliers, joining instructions and advertising material.
Use specialist software to maintain electronic and paper filing and recording systems and create new systems as required.
Greet training participants and other visitors to the centre with due customer care, and receive incoming telephone calls, e-mails, faxes and post to the centre, dealing with any queries that may arise, or forwarding them appropriately.
Record and update room bookings for training events and meetings and maintain registers for course bookings, ensuring all records are kept up to date and participants get accurate and timely joining instructions and other relevant information.
Organise and assist with arrangements for training and the servicing of training events and meetings, and monitor stocks of training materials, reordering as appropriate.
Participate in business, team and departmental meetings to support service planning and new developments, and to work as part of a team.
To undertake any other duties as required by the Director/Centre Co-ordinator.
As for training, it depends on where in the world you're from. I have found vocational qualifications provide a good grounding in almost any occupational sector - as well as providing learning and development opportunities they underpin the knowledge that you may have already acquired and give you the option of accrediting prior learning that you may have undertaken previously.
I have NVQs at Level 3 in Business Administration, Customer Service and Information Technology as well as an HND in Business Management (Human Resources).
If you're currently working in the UK I would strongly recommend this route.
Best of luck
Matt Griffin AffIQPS, LIAV

I think this was posted by another DD'er quite recently so rather than repeat my history perhaps you could scroll through the forums.
