Honestly, some of these people just don't live in the real world at all!

Our collective departments had to produce a short video for a major event.  EVERY STEP of the process was run past Control Freak Big Bossie, who, when he could be bothered to look at it, gave noncommittal answers, no suggestions, and rubber-stamped the approvals to get them off his desk, with comments like, "You people are paid to come up with this stuff, not me."  (Nice.)

Video is produced, Big Bossie looks at final product and THEN decides to offer his cinematic critique.  Doesn't like the music, doesn't like the graphics, doesn't like the voice-overs, doesn't like the backgrounds....you get the picture.  And, by all that's holy, it MUST BE FIXED because it's TERRIBLE and an EMBARRASSMENT, blah blah blah....(Nice little nastygram email went out to everyone involved to that effect -- Really Nice.)

Back it goes to the producer (it was outsourced, of course) in a mad 48 hour scramble to make the changes in time for the event.

Invoice comes in from the producer and (surprise!) the last minute changes added up to an almost 40% cost overrun.  (Remember the good/fast/cheap -- pick two rule!)   Well, you know, if he had taken the time to really LOOK at what had been going on in the production stages like he was supposed to, there wouldn't have been that 48 hour three-ring circus at the end.  And now, Control Break Big Bossie is making all kinds of noise over signing off on the invoice and getting the producer paid.  (Her contract is pretty clear on approvals and changes after approvals!)

What in the world did he expect?  That the producer would pull that midnight-oil burning session for free?  When everything had been approved up unitl now?  On what planet does that happen?

Sheesh.

DidF,

For info I have used and heard the first line of your posting so many times recently....yes what colour is the sky in their world?!  As I have probably posted before somewhere, power goes to their heads.  If bosses have the final say about something you can guarantee they'll either drag it out, make you work overtime to produce something better or like you said, outsource the job only to find that what your team produced in the first place was good.

I don't know what to say, other than yes, we have all experienced the same.  Do they think we are immune to that, or that we don't see what they are doing?  Perhaps some of them fall into the job and don't really want to make the decisions.  I love that saying when they throw something back at you, "You people are paid to come up with this stuff, not me!"  True, but a bit of support along the way wouldn't go amiss.

DidF, that's why good people leave jobs.  Management don't know when they've hired a good'un until it's too late!

This reminds me of a Director in my company who was promoted three years ago to his directorship and then spent MONTHS squealing to anyone who would listen that he had "too much to do", didn't "want to manage" people, found it "boring" etc etc.  Said director soon learned to hold his tongue and get on with his job when one of our colleagues frostily told him that he was PAID (and handsomely) to manage.

Can't always be quite so forthright with very senior managers.
