Hey there guys!  It's about that time for me to ask yet another question to my phenominal source of all answers great and wide.

As most of you know, I started my temp-to-perm job in January, and found out 3 days later I was pregnant. I decided at the moment that the job was enough to get me through to October when the baby's born (because of the insurance), and then I can address some VA stuff, and maybe a new job while on maternity leave. Anyhow, now that I'm perm in this job, I'm *utterly* bored out of my gourd! I'm busy 3 hrs out of my 8 hr day, then its all dead time. And when I AM busy, the stuff I'm doing is just not my thing.. its manufacturing stuff that's out of my league. I feel as if my computer skills are being wasted - I don't even have my own computer at my desk... I share with my boss. Computer time for me is MAYBE 1 hour every 2 days. And I'm miserable... because that's my "thing".

How am I ever gonna get through the next 5 months? Any advice?  I can't go into the factory and spend time learning the biz... the dangers associated with birth defects and such just aren't worth it.  Thoughts, anyone?

I've never pooped out a kid before (hope to some day), but if you ask me, I think that the bigger your belly gets, the more thankful you will be to have the job you've got now.

I know how you feel.  Sometimes I get frustratingly bored here because my boss is mostly in meetings.  I mean 5 out of his 12-hour days, literally.  He's never in his office, so I had to become proactive and find things to do.  Filing is my LEAST favorite thing to do, but it happens to be my boss' pet peeve so I began auditing the files...6 months ago.  I'm halfway through and it's great.  When I get bored, pull out a file folder and get to work.  I'm always occupied now.  I say, ask your boss if there's anything he thinks needs doing and get to it.  He may be impressed by your initiative.

Hey, Jade, were you easily bored in school (like me)?  I can empathize.  If my brain isn't being pushed I get bored...real fast.  The toughest things for me here are those so-called

...like filing.  To me, filing is like being told to concentrate on a dot in the middle of a blank page.  To make matters worse, I tend to be a creative/conceptual type, not a detail type.  I feel your mental pain!  I don't have an easy answer.  It's almost like doing mental yoga or something.  I've had to really work on developing a mental discipline to be able to keep concentrating on those things that bore me to death.  Ugh!

Hopefully, they're just seeing how you can "fit in" and who knows?  maybe a crisis will arise that will allow you to SHINE in all your administrative glory!

My escape is to get something REALLY GOOD and THICK to read during my lunch and breaks.  And I love it when PBS is showing something really cool.  I've also gotten back into singing in a choir.  (Nothing like reading music and watching a director to get the ol' noggin going.)  Whatever it is that gets your brain snapping, do it at every opportunity to hold you through those dry times.

Hang in there!

So what happens when you are bored to tears (literally!) in your current job, and some HR guy calls you on a resume you sent to his company 9 months before? A party!!!

No seriously, I had a phone interview today when this HR guy called me. He said from my resume and our conversation I sounded like a qualified applicant to a position he had, and wanted to meet me tomorrow. I was hesitant, and told him so. I mentioned my pregnancy, my financial requirements and maternity leave requirements, and he didn't seem to blink. He said the salary was no problem, nor was the pregnancy provided I was planning on returning to work after my leave. Wow!

As for filing and what not to fill my time.... it's not my job, and I've been told specifically so by the person that does it. And when I ask for something to do, I just get more paperwork added to the mountain I get everyday. Don't get me wrong, ANYTHING is better than nothing... but my goodness, I feel wasted here!

I'll let y'all know what happens tomorrow!

Hi, Jade:

Sorry, but I have little sympathy for you.  You are bright, talented, and now you've finally got a job, which is what you've been after for who knows how long.  You say the computer is your thing.  Well, since you have so much free time, why not start chatting to others about what they're doing.  What problems are they experiencing that you may be able to help them remedy - - on the COMPUTER?!  And, if they're not experiencing computer problems, help them in other areas and maybe the computer projects will come after you've built up trust.  Of all things, don't whine!  Are all the files up to date?  Is there a file guide?  Is there a complete inventory of computer equipment?  Would the I.S. department (if there is one) mind if you assisted them with some of their stuff.  You can think of plenty more stuff, I know.  Here's a little soft kick in that talented pregnant hiney of yours:  GET MOTIVATED AND DETERMINED.  Just DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING  !!  (Get the message?!)  Love ya - GE

I don't know why oh WHY I have to hit reload everytime I go onto a new screen here.  Didn't see your new job possibility posting until after I posted my butt-kicking message.  That's great, too.  I hope it works out. I really am bugging off the boards now, because I just can't take anymore squeaking from anybody this week!  How do you people have time to go to monster.com and ivillage, too?!  I'm learning, from personal experience, that kicking my own hiney and getting it into gear on a pet project of mine is paying great results, slowly, but steadily, so I'd encourage you ALL to give your own little hinies a kick start, if needed, and get to work on something productive that will improve the quality of your life.  See you later!!!!  GE

Is there an up to date desk manual?  If not and since there's a chance you might be leaving, why not create or update one?  You can use some of your computer skills to make it look really nifty, making any replacement or temp pea-green with envy.

Well, first of all, this job was created when I took the position. I don't have a real clear description if what it is I actually *DO* (and neither does anyone else) so writing a desk manual would be a waste of time in the long run. Updating files, as I said already, is clearly not for me to be doing. Plus, my boss needs his computer frequently, and my hour or so allotment is all that can be spared... so taking on anything like that is out also.

As for jumping into MIS on my own... not an option either because there is one person hired specifically for the job, who has *just enough* of his own work (similar situation to mine) and doesn't want some admin coming in and stepping on the only work he has. Which is understandable.

So, I'll just have to tough it out somehow. Maybe this interview will work out, maybe it won't. It would be dumb of me to look for something new right now... it'll take away my focus of staying busy/happy here.

I'll post an update later about the interview.

I hope that the interview goes well for you!  It looks like you need change.  You know better than we do what your constraints there are.  I can't see you not having tried every avenue to find more to do in terms of busy work.  After all, you're a regular here!  I hope things work out.  And I hope your symptoms are easy on you!

I can't believe in this day and age of inexpensive computers that you have to share a computer with the boss.  How awful!  I can't imagine how inconvenient that must be. I'll bet it's interesting when you're trying to do a report and you can only do it one hour at a time.  Bet those fingers are shooting sparks across the keyboard!

Well, interview went well. So well in fact, they invited me to come in for a half day to see if it'd be something I'm interested in. Boy, I'd love that... but can't swing the half day off from current job. But I did get that warm fuzzy feeling you get when vibes are good.

Anyhow, they are gonna call me later this evening and let me know what they have decided. I might take the offer if it's there.. because my boss told me secretely today that he's considering another offer. (I had heard this from the office gossip, so I wasn't surprised). But, if my current boss leaves, I'll have no direction what-so-ever in this position. In fact, today they added back-up phone duties to my job description, because the *5* girls already assigned to answer the 8-line system can't handle it (interesting, eh? I can answer an 8 line system single-handedly!).

Wish me luck!
