May be too late, but I got my old boss when he turned the big 50.  He wanted to keep it quiet.  Rather than make a fuss, I got black golf balls, black tees, a couple of cigars (one black) and Nike Black (actually white) golf balls.  Put them in a nice gift bag with a black background and a card that said "There are still sports for Old farts like you"  ....He is a sports nut.  Baked some brownie bites and apple bread.  Had the gift bag and card at his seat prior to his staff meeting and served the goodies.  Needless to say, it was low key, but he appreciated it.  The team chipped in.  No black balloons   For my milestone birthday, he brought me a cake, two cards and a gift card.  I was pleased since he never acknowledged before.
