I have my own office which is the off the main office, which is open plan. My boss and I have a connecting door, which either one of us is at liberty to close if we need to.
Last year I was dealing with a lot of disciplinary stuff involving a member of staff, and while I kept our connecting door open, I closed the door to the main office.
I did so because I have quite a clear voice and although I can lower it, sometimes it's hard to forget to do so and because this was so confidential, I just shut the door - obviously that alerts folk to the fact something's going on, but everyone's very good and doesn't ask!
In terms of personal stuff, I would do that over lunch time and on my mobile so would either go out, or again use my office and shut relevant door/s as required.
