We have a "green" initiative here in my offices, and also at home. The result is that we don't actually throw away much rubbish; most things are recycled.
The worst thing, I find, is packaging. Sometimes, the best quality of, say, a food item is only available pre-packed. The plastic trays and plastic film could be replaced - at a cost, of course - by trays and films made of recyclable materials. Rather weirdly, most pre-packed organic food is packed that way, but not "ordinary" food.
Make-up is another of my bugbears. I have used a certain brand for many years; I'm beginning to question just what happens to all the smart compacts and tubes when I finished with them. My local Council doesn't accept them for recycling.
Though, as you say, Rondort, every little helps.
