My MD is constantly on the go and it can be days on end before I actually see him. On the days that he's in the office we always have a catch up meeting for 10-15 mins where we go through everything that's going on and plan as much ahead as possible. Our offices are next door to each other and we pop in and out as and when we need something. When he's on the road he calls in at least once a day to touch base, and if I need him urgently for anything we use email or text messaging.
I think it does all depend on the relationship with your boss. We work very closely together but he much prefers a hands off approach and leaves me to get on with stuff without his interference. Much of my job involves project work which I manage on my own anyway, so it doesn't make a great deal of difference whether he's in the office or out, as long as I know I can contact him at any time if I need an answer on something. We've been working together for nearly 7 years, but we slipped into this way of working quite easily from the beginning. It suits us both - he's free to come and go as he likes and not be tied to the office, and I'm free to get on with stuff without him breathing down my neck. I've been doing this so long now that I don't think I could cope with a boss that was here all day every day!
