I'm more of a "morning" person when the sun is up when my alarm goes off...in the winter when it is pitch black, the only thing I want to do is roll over for more sleep.  To help with this, I bought one of those slowly-brightening lamps (simulates a sunrise), and it has helped me get up in the winter.  Once I am up, I am okay, but I am at my most productive early afternoon.
