I would give the benefit of the doubt in that what they said is indeed the truth. If you don't hear anything by weeks end, then I would not be so optimistic and maybe a followup phone call would be in order.
At my current position my boss didn't call me back right away and it was something that couldn't be helped. Maybe they are finishing up interviews and just checking what they have at the moment. Don't count yourself out of the race just yet.
