How many times a week do you walk up to a photocopier and have to un jam it, due to someone just walking away?

Not very often.

Considering how many people use the printer/copiers we have in the building I reside in, it would be shameful to walk away and leave a paper jam.

I was printing overheads just recently and pages jammed.  I would never walk away without releasing the jam and co-workers seem to be co-operative if they do the same.  If an issue arises where the jam cannot be released, then a quick call to IT normally resolves it.

I work in a very busy environment so walking away would be frowned upon especially as admins are usually the ones called upon to log such issues to IT.

Many places that I have worked you have to log in (on the copier) before using the copier as copies are charged to clients, therefore, you know who last used the machine.  Specific directions are posted in case it jams and if you cannot fix it then who to call.

In a position several years ago, my office was directly next to the copy room. I had to fix the copy machine so often that the Xerox repair technician gave me a training on fixing the most common errors (besides the simple paper jam) and how to replace parts on the machine.  I don't miss those days.

Now I work in the back of the office, we have a small copier that is only used by a couple of us so I don't have a problem anymore.

Our copier doesn't jam very often.  However, it also functions as a printer and scanner, and has many other fun features that most staff don't understand how to use.  Usually when I walk up to the copier, it is beeping an error message because someone tried to do something fancy, couldn't figure it out, and gave up and walked away.  The beeping is because the copier needs something in the bypass tray or other prompt that the person couldn't figure out how to clear.

It used to get left alot, and usually the same person would get stuck cleaning it out.  It's not that hard to do, but they always say they missed the training on it, or don't know how to do it which usually means they don't want to.  It's not that hard to un-jam our copiers, they are all labeled and color coded, so it is really easy to do.

I'm going to age myself.  Many years ago I was a "key" person.  Which meant I was one of the choosen few who had a key to unlock the copier and was trained in unjamming.  That was probably once a day.  In my current position I think I've unjammed about three times and I don't know of anyone here who has left it jammed.
