I am deliberating over asking at work whether I could visit Creme in May, and would welcome any input on the following from anyone who has visited in the past couple of years.

Creme takes place in May, which is a very busy period for our company. This would mean one day out of the office, and I would need to present a case for the benefits of visiting the exhibition over a day out of work.

The cost of the seminars - any opinions of the most beneficial? There does not appear to be much information on the IT seminars, so I do not want to learn whatI already know. Some of the others seem very reasonable and beneficial.

London is far away from where I live, so there would be travel costs involved.

What are the best and most beneficial, both professionally and personally?  

Some of the information on the website appears to be aimed towards changing jobs, however I am not looking for a new job, but want to improve my curent skills and learn new skills. I am not interested in going to a jobs fair.

All comments welcome, as I need to make my move quick!!

Hi Debs

Ok, here's my 2p worth

Firstly you don't say where you're from, but I'm guessing north of England somewhere - last year Creme also took place in Manchester, don't know if they're planning that this year - it was smaller though.  I too have done Creme in a day - 5 am train from Edinburgh, back at 6, delayed got home at midnight - TIRED!!!

Ok, firstly if you've never been to Creme before, it IS a good day out.  As for the seminars, you're right, you need to choose carefully as they are getting a little pricey for the time you get.  I would recommend those run by Capita (formerly the Industrial Society) - Judi James is a great speaker and I've always enjoyed her seminars when I've done timings for her over the years - don't be put off or misled by her dead pan expression, she is very very funny.  I would say, though, don't try and fit too many seminars into a day or you'll be knackered.  I would say max two and one would be enough if that's all you wanted to do.  As for the IT ones, you get just under an hour so there really isn't any time to go into anything in depth, so probably not worth doing, unless you want a very brief intro to something you don't know at all and are curious about.

Remember the hall is hot with all the lights and if it's warm outside, as it was one year, it's excruciatingly hot - don't dehydrate, drink lots of water, and remember to sit down occasionally!  

There are usually lots of hotel/travel type exhibitors, pen/stationery companies, event organisers, venues, recruitment companies.  A lot of what you will find of interest very much depends on what you do at work, and where your responsibilities lie.  If you're the organiser of events where you need to source venues, items as giveaways, etc, then Creme is a good place for ideas.

It's very much up to you - only you know what asking for a day off in a busy month will be like.  If you get OS mag (mine came this morning but I've not read yet) I see there's an article about Creme which may be worth reading.  The Creme site will naturally 'sell' it the best, but if you need to do that for your boss, it may be worth checking it out.  If you do go for it, it's a day away, not a day's holiday - it's part of your development, and not a jolly - you will have sore feet from all the walking on hard floor, and you get lots of stuff to carry home - it's a good idea to start off light when leaving home!!!

One of the things I used to really enjoy about Creme was the fact the London Wine Fair was also in Olympia at the same time (altho it was havoc with parking on build up/break down for us exhibitors!) but it's moved venues now to Docklands which is a real shame, cos now I have a client in that business and would be able to get in!

No doubt there will be others here who have been to Creme in the past who will give you their thoughts.  As a past (and current) exhibitor, I've tried to be quite objective for you and while I haven't said definitely you should go, or not go, I hope that I've given you a little balance to think about.

If I were you, I wouldn't push the issue if it will be difficult at work.  I visited creme last year and attended 4 seminars - one was a complete waste of time (difficult to hear, un-charismatic presenter, etc.), one was really good, and the other two basically covered things I already knew as there isn't enough time to get to grips with meatier things.  

I felt that a lot of the attendees were more interested in a day out of the office and collecting freebies, than using it for networking or career development.  Having said that I did get some useful information and met some lovely ladies, but despite living and working in London I don't think the value was great enough to attend again for at least a few years.

Having been involved in organising exhibitions, 'manning' the stand at trade shows, etc. I personally don't think there is a massive amount of value in them.  The company I used to work for exhibited at about a dozen exhibitions globally each year, but generally the only business case was to stop rumours in the trade that maybe things weren't going too well if we didn't - basically just PR rather than useful business.

I'm painting quite a gloomy picture here, probably coloured by the fact I visited the urban gardens exhibition this weekend at Olympia and found it a real disappointment!  I think I should just avoid exhibitions!

Many thanks for your replies.

I am based in the north east, so it would mean a 4 hour train journey, early start, late finish.

My job is a PA, for a small/ medium size firm, and I want to develop myself, learn new skills, and am interested in meeting companies relating to travel,  IT, stationary, exhibitions, venues, communicatons, etc.

Luckily I work 2 minutes from a venue where some seminars similar to those advertised take place, and have attended one time management which was beneficial and reasonably priced.

As I have not been before, and would prefer a closer venue, if I go I will need to pick out a few companies from the website, head for these, and try not to get get side-tracked! (Shame there are no links on the website to the companies.....).

Naturally there are companies and brands I have heard of, some are new, but I will need to do a bit of homework on the non-London-based companies in order to determine if this would be worth the day.

Once again, thanks for the replies, and any comments welcome.

Hello Debs
Do you know Easyjet fly from Newcatle to Stansted for quite cheap fare!  There is even a flight very early at 0645 landing at 0755 for £6, which gives you time to get there then you can return at 1805 for £11.50 (all fares excl taxes of course).  Better than the train!
Have a think.  I does sound like you want to go so why not try it?

You'd probably need to pay as much again in tube and train fares - Stansted trains will take you to Tottenham Hale, Seven Sisters or Liverpool Street but find out how the tubes are acting before you go to Liverpool Street - there has been trouble.
