I have my own office. I keep my door open most of the time and only close it occasionally if I need to work in monastic seclusion or to make/receive a confidential call.
The subject of personal calls at work can be a bit of a hot potato. Whether or not you make those sorts of calls at work, in your lunch break, or after work all depends on the nature of the call and the culture of your workplace.
In my current post, we actually have written into our employment contracts that we are allowed to make "limited use" of the telephone service and internet/email service for personal matters. Any abuses can easily be picked up because each telephone extension has all calls made logged against it on the main system and in the monthly telephone account. There are, of course, always cell phones, but not everyone has those.
