Hey everyone!!
My bosses decided to go on vacation virtually leaving me with nothing to do. Bad them! Just kidding! I was just wondering what do you do when your boss(es) are gone? :\
They just left yesterday and I'm bored out of my mind! Of course I was proactive and cleaned up but other than that I'm done. I do have some smaller things here and there but there is no way that going to last me the all next week.
Give some ideas Please!
Thank in advance!
Bridget

These are the kinds of day I like. Gives you a chance to go thru the file folders and review, catch up or purge. Also use it for an opportunity to do the same thing on the computer with file folders.....sort things in catch all folders into individual folders....or copy from harddrive to disk to clean stuff off harddrive.
Also a chance to get on the net and check out all the great sites for admins...so many interesting stories and articles and comments out here.
Enjoy!
Have a friend who's boss has some heart problems so is not in the office...she tho she would have time to play catch up....no such luck...he is emailing her at least every 30 minutes with another question, something to research, etc. Some days you just can't win.

Wish I could say that! I'm always busier when my boss is gone than when she's there! Before she leaves, she cleans off her desk and leaves everything in my basket with post-its on everything and then has a list of projects to do in my spare time.

In the last month, I've lost half of the admin staff (my coworker) and watched the receptionist (who's title is actually admin. asst.) work herself down to nothing. Our pseudo-supervisor was the exec. asmin. who retired. I say pseudo because she wasn't truly our supervisor but we took direction from her because she knew how to give it properly (politely) and she had a lot of work to delegate. I think the recep. resents me taking over as supervisor. But this isn't my problem. My problem is convincing my boss (her boss as well) to either speak to her or to get a new person. I'm tired of doing it all. I get the old exec. admin. replaced tomorrow, but we're looking at a month of learning curve, at least. I have an entire filing system that's over 2 years old to audit, not to mention the filing that piling up. You can take half your day, give it to Andrea and take the other half and give it to me. I'm sure you know how to file things chronologically. Unfortunately, my recep. does not. She just sticking things in the folder any old way, and these are folders I've previously audited! I'm going around in circles!
Sorry to vent, but my boss NEVER takes vacations or days off. I'm stuck with him up my butt and with me being so anal about things, there's barely room for the chair up there without him trying to get some room!!! (See other post about what bothers you)
Hope this is a better week. Oh, yeah, it's supposed to snow a foot here today! Happy frickin' Monday.

It's never slow when my boss is gone! Instead of just having my two email accounts to go through (about 50-75 a day), I've got his email account to handle as well (about 100-150). And the 2 deputies and 11 division commanders are still around, and while the 11 division commanders have their own admins, they still seem to require some help with "interpretation" of what the boss had asked for before he left. So between reading 200 emails a day, reviewing 10-15 staff packages, and responding to our four phone lines plus the "hot lines"...oh, and trying to coordinate three calendars, three flying schedules, and several VIP visits all for the same time (of course), gee is it any wonder I don't have enough time....
OK...so today was one of the more hectic days...(but I secretly love it)

I could be missing something here, because I don't read every single posting/thread. BUT, Bohorquez are you new to TAA? If so, welcome. If not, sorry I've missed your previous posts. And the same for BreezyBlnd. Frankly, I hardly ever have anything to do. I know I've said it in previous posts, but I don't understand why they thought they needed an admin. So, every day I am trying to find something to do. I spend a lot of time online. I check my emails at home, check TAA, check classmates.com, IAAP, etc. Today I looked into flights to Toronto for the IAAP International Convention in July. I have other things that keep me busy, but they are not work-related. Suggestion: Try going to other departments. See if anyone has anything you can do. I do recommend, however, that you insist that it is something you can do at your desk. You don't want bossie to call in and you not be at your desk. You could go into bossie's office, rearrange everything on the desk and in the drawers and when he/she returns just tell him/her that's he/she gets for going on vacation! ! ! (I'm evil... P.S. QQ - I can show you the way to the jacuzzi but it's going to be verrrrrry cold, brrrrrrrrrrrrr. How about a fire and the bottle of wine? Oh h---, how about just the wine! sungoddess

Hi Hi! Actually I don't consider myself "new". I've been really active at OfficeClick since last year but I've starting to making the slow change to TAA! I'm happy to be here. Well FYI the bosses are back but still no work. I would go around and ask for work from other departments the only problem is that there are no other departments! haha There is a total of 11 employees! We're a pretty small company! Thanks for all the advice! Bridget

Here are some suggestions regarding things you can do when your bosses are not around:
- Clean out/reorganize desk files--discard unnecessary correspondence.
- Create a notebook to track your accomplishments (it'll come in handy when you're asking for a raise or looking for another position) then update it regularly.
- Read instruction manuals that you don't usually have time for.
- Develop standard followup procedures.
- Familiarize yourself with the organizational structure of your company. Find out what areas perform which functions.
- Take the time to consider aspects of your job that you'd like to perform better. Plan how to do just that.
Good luck in making the most of your quiet time!
