Hi All,

Apparently there is a list of standard secretarial symbols, for when you're typing up a handwritten documen - someone makes changes using these symbols and I have to know what they mean! Can anyone tell me where I can find a list like this?

Thanks so much!

Hi, Happy Friday! Those are probably editing symbols. I found a good list at the attached link.
Hope it helps.

Hi there

That's a great site!  If you go to the index - http://www.pnl.gov/ag/agindex.html - there are lots of great pages!

Thank you!

I know these from my early typing days - are you all mostly trained in typing or wordprocessing?

G

good question.  These types of symbols are something I always grew up with, with my dad writing and proofing his own manuscripts but have no idea where or how other people learn(ed) them.  It woudl be interesting to find out  from others (pure curiousity or just me being nosey? I don't know)

I learned them in both my HS typing class and in my College-level English courses.  The instructors all use these symbols, and if we had to make a correction on our typed papers before turning them in, then we had to use the correct symbol to go along with the correction.  And this was after I'd started using the computer.  Sometimes you just miss simple things, no matter how helpful spell-check and all can be.    I can honestly say that I haven't seem them used much in my business world, but there are a few folks that I wish would use them instead of the chicken scratch corrections that they make.

I learned printers corrections at school too - they were part of the RSA (now OCR) exams, and if you didn't understand them, then you couldn't complete your paper properly.

I still use some of them quite frequently and find them extremely useful - I'm with you about chicken scratches - I wish more people knew printers corrections and used them, it would make life a lot simpler!
