2012 is here.  Have you thought about how you will personally enhance your career?  Do you have the time/resources/desire to do something educational?  If you do, what do you plan to do?  Will you attend a class, take a seminar, attend a conference, find an online tutorial?  Will you do something on your own or does your employer help further your education?  How do you plan to better yourself in 2012?

My company have recently introduced e-learning and I have been able to complete training in Office 2007.

Whether or not my employer is in a position to pay or contribute to exam fees, is another thing entirely, but at least the tools are in place for each individual to pursue something worthwhile.

It's only 4 January, so early days, given we went through voluntary redundancy at the end of 2011.

My company has offered Lynda.com training to any admin who wants it.  It's online classes in all kinds of technology from Apple to Microsoft and many more.  The classes are video chapters so it's easy to block out an hour and watch a few videos and classes are 1-9 hours in length. My goal is ten certificates this year. IAAP accepted these classes last year for recertification, so I'm trying to get ahead on those points.  Last year I was able to transition from Microsoft 2003 to 2007 using the classes, now I would like to fine tune my skills.  Some of the classes include using styles in word, working with long documents etc.    As I have a mac at home I would also like to take a Numbers, Pages and iPhoto classes.

I am going to be doing a LOT this year professionally.

I'm planning to finish up the Office 2010 certification exams.

I am leading a CAP study group for the next 17 weeks.

I'm sitting for the CAP exam in May 2012.

In June (if all goes as planned), I'll be sworn in as the president of my division in IAAP.

This year is going to be busy on the training side for me, too.

I shall be doing PRINCE 2 training next week (we all have to do this in my company).

In February, I shall be taking a course alongside Trustees of my company's newly-formed charitable foundation.  It's a course in how to be a Trustee, so it's good for me to join them and study with them.

I'm also going to sign up for the Institute of Chartered Secretaries training.  That study will take some time.  I may get some funding from my company, but I also think one has to be prepared to invest in one's own future.

This year, I too will be doing a lot of train-ing!  Yep, riding the train to work, on holiday, emigrating!

You have got to be kidding - I had to train myself in most things I am now considered a minor expert at!  For example, yesterday I was scheduled to have refresher training on the accounts packages that we use (along with about 8 other people) - in reality, it was a secret exam!  Angry  Sneaky doesn't fully describe it. Plus it was my first day back in the office having been off ill with a stomach bug all week! (I am better-ish now and at work!).

Jess (aced that exam!)
