My dad lost his job almost 2 months ago now, and I've been helping him with his job search by looking at all the online sites and forwarding to him the sort of jobs he's been looking for. While searching, I came across an ad for a job that would stretch my job duties quiet a bit, and in addition comes with a $14k per year salary increase!

So, I mailed my resume. I received an email telling me that of the 170 resumes they received, they were interested in interviewing the top 20 candidates and I was one of the 20.  I was off work yesterday (Tuesday) for a comp day from working event overtime last week and went to the interview.

I don't think the office is quite as informal as the one I am in currently, but I didn't get that "warning flag" stuffy feeling, either. It was a different sort of office, but certainly someplace I could work. It is also non-profit (my specialty), so it really fits into my career plan.

The interview seemed to be "too simple" and I thought maybe I was overqualified for the job. I glanced at the resume I had mailed, and I noticed they had highlighted almost my entire resume. They didn't ask those tough interview questions about strengths and weakness, or the stumpers so often dreaded. But within an hour of my departure, I got an email asking me for a second interview.

Ok... so now my pickle. They want me to be there Friday morning for the 2nd interview. This is a problem only because I just had off on Tuesday and as it is, I am behind in my work from last week's events and my day off. In my normal realm of things, I'd never dream of taking time off on Friday for anything short of extremely ill children. And I just hate lying to my bossie. And the potential new bossie was very accomodating... he set the interview at 1:30, and when I said it was tough and I'd prefer first thing or end of day he fired back with 8am. I had hoped for sure he'd push it to Monday, but didn't. So now I guess my daughter will get sick on Thursday that requires a Friday morning appointment or something. Ugh!

Suggestions, anyone?

Is there a reason you don't want to mention anything about this to your current boss?  I'm sorry, I've been out of it lately, but I can't remember if you're having problems at work or what.  If you're not having problems, I would suggest telling bossie that you need to come in late on Friday for personal reasons, and leave it at that.  My concern is that if you don't let him know that you're possibly looking for career advancement opportunities, how are you going to tell him that you have to leave if you get the job?  By letting him know that you are looking for advancement opportunities, it leaves you open to look internally (if possible) and externally, all to better your career and possibly the company (if they put you forward for internal promotions).

Tough situation otherwise.  If you can't tell bossie, then you should still claim personal reasons for needing to come in late on Friday and not lie regarding your daughter being ill.  Like was once posted here before, a lie came back to bite someone else.  What if your daughter, or her school, call the office while you're out?  Better to stick to the truth, or what you can of it, than to lie.

Good luck on the interview, though.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Alright, here is my take on the matter.  Any company that is the least bit professional will understand that you are not willing take off using company time/sick time to do an interview.  My reasoning for this is (and you should put it this way to them) that they would not want you to do that to them if they did hire you, so why should they expect you to do it to the company you work for now.  Ask if there is any way you can meet with them before or after your company's current hours, or if they can do it that Saturday.  Seeing as it's a second interview, they must see something that peaks their interest, and they should make allowences.  Also, I think it will make you look good in their eyes as actions speak louder than words.

No, not really problems at work. I've had issues with the office in general (Remember Marge?) but otherwise everything is fine.

And I realized last night that there was no way I could look my boss in the eye this morning and lie to her. I mean, she's always been up front with me, and she's even joked that if she were to ever find another job, she'd make sure they had room for me, too.

She was surprised at first... but then as I told her about the opportunity, she said she'd be disappointed in me if I didn't pursue (at least) the interview. She told me to be careful not to see dollar signs and to make a list of pros and cons, and that if I'm offered a job to just ask for the weekend to think it over before letting them know if I'd accept the offer.

On my list of things I'd like to get a feel for, I want to know whether or not the boss is a micromanager. Now, I can't just say, "So, do you micromanage your employees?" so, how exactly can I figure that out? Also, I want to know that on the rare occasion that my kids are sick, that I won't be scrutinized for it. That when I have to work overtime, that I am available as early in the AM as needed, but can't work later than a certain time (on a regular basis) because of daycare hours. But I'm fearful that those types of questions would be detrimental to the interview.... do you guys think that those sorts of questions would say, "This applicant is just looking to make her own job instead of following the way we do things here."

Thoughts?

re finding out about micromanagement - difficult one - ask about supervision/ induction/who would help you fit into your new responsibilities. Bring in examples when they ask you questions of your use of initiative and not needing to be micromanaged - if they're impressed they hopefully don't micromanage, if they're not perhaps it's not what you want.

Well, I don't know. My Friday interview got cancelled at the last minute. And, I don't know what to think about the message that I got that cancelled it. Here it is:

"Lori, Sorry but tomorrow won't work out after all. I've gone ahead and forwarded your resume to the persons conducting the 2nd interviews. If they would still like to meet with you after finishing the other 2nd interviews this week, I'll be getting in touch. Thanks!"

So, I don't know what to think. My boss (who I told about the opportunity) thinks that it's possible that I am the #1 candidate, and that they just needed additional information from the other candidates before making a final decision.

Bossie thinks I am a shoe-in because of some software training I have that is very rare to find in a job applicant. This organization has this software (it's expensive) sitting in a box because no one currently there knows how to use it. That alone, in bossie's view, should make me the #1 choice.

Now it's Tuesday and still no word, so I'm not very optimistic today at all.

Jade,

I would give the benefit of the doubt in that what they said is indeed the truth.  If you don't hear anything by weeks end, then I would not be so optimistic and maybe a followup phone call would be in order.

At my current position my boss didn't call me back right away and it was something that couldn't be helped.  Maybe they are finishing up interviews and just checking what they have at the moment.  Don't count yourself out of the race just yet.

Good luck and positive vibes comin your way.  Let us know if you hear differently.

I don't think it would be bad for you to call on maybe Friday just to follow up.  I'd say something around like you wanted to follow up on the vm since you haven't heard from them.
