I think it would be better to find a positive compliment than a negative compliment - rather than not being smug she is (word for the opposite of smug) - or a slightly different approach "she is able to share her knowledge of computers in a helpful, friendly and encouraging way"
If your boss prefers the original tack, unintimidating or non-threatening - I don't know - I really think trying to find positive words rather than ones describing non-negatives is better.
