Well, I had my interview this morning and as far as I am concerned, it went great.  It was the first time I had ever been interviewed by a panel or even intervied for a state job.  I really liked the fact that they had their questions pre-prepared and allowed me to review the questions before I was interviewed.  Now I just have to wait and see if I make it to the next round.  I was told that because of new reforms to the hiring process by our governor and the current hiring freeze, their recommendations would have to reviewed by the Department's Commissioner and it may be a few weeks.  But overall, I'm optimistic.  If its the job for me, things will be fine.

One of the questions I was asked though is one I think should be asked at all interviews and I wanted to share it with everyone.  I was asked how I would handle a task that was "uninteresting" to me.  To me this was a thoroughly unique question, but it is a situation that admins office face.

My response was that I would take care of what I was required to do.  That yes, if it was not a priority, I would probably procrastinate about getting it done (hey, I was being honest......lol), but that I would make sure to meet whatever requirements were set for the task.

Now I'm curious about how ya'll would have answered this question.

I would have said basically the same thing.  No matter what job you have there is always 1 or 2 "uninteresting" tasks required.  Great answer.

Good Luck, sending <<<<<good vibes>>>>> your way.

MLM668,

That really is a good question and I think you handled it just fine.  You gave an honest answer, so how could anyone find fault with that answer?

I wish you the best.  I'm sure if you have such a positive feeling, you must have done very well.  The hard part is going to be waiting, and waiting, and WAITING, for what seems to be an ETERNITY!

Please let us know how it turns out, one way or another. And if you should go on other interviews, share those with us too. I think everyone here is always interested in interview, questions, etc.

Sending positive new employment vibes your way ~~~~^^^^^~~~~~

That was a great and honest response.  And if you have good feelings after the interview, then the hard part will be the waiting.  Good luck.

And since you asked - I have a different way of answering it...  I would have said something like 'Anytime I find myself with a duty that's uninteresting, I do what I can to make it more interesting for myself.  Either way the job gets done.'

I like to show my willingness for change.  In fact, I love - even strive -  on change.  I'm one of the few people I know that literally hates to do things just because 'that's the way they've always been done'.  To the simple... if it's always done facing the east, why don't we face the west and do it.  Why?  Just because, just to see if it works the same then.  In interviews I like to show this trait but play it in a way that doesn't make me a rebel but an assett.  (Of course, I've always applied for and worked in areas where change is expected so this quality is watched for.)

ML M668:

Are you from Iowa by any chance?

Sounds familiar. I work for state government in Iowa and we had a change in hiring policies this year and because of current budget cuts we are on a hiring freeze and layoff situation too.

No, I'm from Virginia.  Our state DOT has been going through some changes over the past 5 years (structure and practices).  A lot of the higher ups have changed the past few years and the Gov. has tightened the reigns on their budget somet his past year.  I knew about the hiring freeze, but the job sounded to good not to apply for.  Since I have a job now, I can afford to wait.  I'm just bored where I am (company workload is fine overall, just mine has diminished due to how our largest project is being managed).  I've got my fingers crossed and keep telling myself, if its the right job, things will work out.
