Do others use acronyms in their offices. Today I realized we do A LOT! I had a conversation that I would see on a cartoon, tv or something. It went, "Hey, Tom signed off on the DR but was supposed to sign the POV, but he was in a MRB meeting, I will get it to you ASAP." I laughed and had to share that. Do other companies use acronyms. (I think it is acronyms

Exactly what Becky describes happens all day long where I work. When you read REF, DAB, MAB etc it seems fine but when two people are talking and using these, the sentences sound strange with every other word being MAB, DOS etc.
When taking minutes I stop the meeting each time I hear one I do not know - which is often - as new ones appear to be 'invented' all the time. I think they get fed up of me saying "what does that mean" every two minutes but what can you do......

We use comparatively few acronyms but do refer constantly to 'agendas' and 'strategies' - one example (does include an acronym of a strategy) " ... how does that sit within the SHIP? ..." is nothing to do with boats!
A tip though for anyone new to an organisation - get to know the business' shorthand - it makes a huge difference to your credibility with colleagues when you use it appropriately

Good advice Cathy S - never be afraid to ask for clarification.
I have built up quite a list of these now which comes in handy when some are not used for a while.
I was in a meeting recently with some 100 people and the speaker mentioned an acronym and carried on speaking. Behind me I could hear some 90 people whispering "what does that mean" but nobody asked. Then one lone hand went up - you could hear the others relief someone did.

I agree with the 2 Cathy's. I have a list of acronyms too but it's never ending. Someone referred to my boss as bad the other day, then I remembered they meant BAD (Bus Area Director)
