I don't like the latest adapation of Jane Eyre. However, there has only been one episode, so it may improve as the story goes on.
I have read Jane Eyre many times and know the background to the story - much of the book is based on Charlotte Bronte's own experiences as well as histories and legends in her locality. I've seen several different productions, but I still prefer Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke (also a BBC production) as Mr Rochester and Jane. It was very true to the written story.
Every director films books from a different angle and so the viewer experiences different aspects of the story. I didn't, for example, appreciate the last BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Alison Steadman, who acted the part of Mrs Bennett, was rather shrewish and vulgar, instead of the slightly twittery, but very ladylike, Mrs Bennett that Jane Austen described. On the other hand, I know lots of people simply swooned over the actor who played the part of Mr Darcy.
