I have used both systems and there are definitely advantages and disadvantages to each system.

This is a very active bulletin board. However, many other sites do not have such levels of activity. People have to actually remember to go back and physically check a site to see if there are new postings.  Few sites are interesting or active enough for people to return to on a daily basis.

With a listserve, whenever there is a new posting you are automatically emailed. When there is a reply, the response goes to the entire list, thereby ensuring that everyone learns.

I like the permanence of a bulletin board, where I can return and search for past messages.

I like the immediacy of the listserve. Personally, I never use the digests, but that's just my personal preference. On less active bulletin boards, the listserve is substantially faster for getting responses. Here that is less of an issue.
