No, he was just sitting there staring into space.  He takes calls that way too.  I know sometimes you want to write down things, take notes etc. while you're on the phone, but do we really need a speaker phone turned way up for THAT?  I don't think so.  I can just see me doing that, and that being OK with everyone.
