Oh my - now you know that they have to be SOMEWHERE!
Were your e-mails stored on a network? And what is the back-up policy of that network? If your IT guy cannot restore files from days, weeks, even months past, either he is ignorant or incompetant. The files SHOULD HAVE BEEN BACKED UP! If they weren't, or if he doesn't know how to get them, the problem might be the IT guy.
Now, if they were stored on your hard drive, they might be gone. Ask your IT department how you should be backing up your computer so that this doesn't happen again.
