1  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: New Job Help on: February 26, 2008, 08:30:17 pm
Marie,

Thank you for your help. I will definately make time to meet with boss.  I have asked several times if anyone needed help.  When I do so, they tell me there is nothing, then they send me home.  Most of the time, I wait until close to the end of the day, so that I have at least 30 hours in a week (for financial reasons).

The people here are so nice and it is definately a position I would like to stay with, but I hate being bored.

Thanks again

Susan

I am on a temporary assignment that was supposed to last 1-3 days but I have been here for about 4 weeks.  At first the job was great, I had lots of work and some of it was challenging for me since I have not used Excel as much as I have been doing.  I really like challenge in my jobs.

On my first day here, my supervisor asked if I was looking for a permanent position and we talked for quite sometime and he said he would like to bring me on and he would get back with me.  Since then he has mentioned that fact several times until recently.  Over the past several days, the supervisor has been out of the office leaving me with virtually no work causing me to surf the internet (he told me this would be fine when I had down time) and causing me to leave work early losing time and money.  Today he came back in the office and I had just one minute with him, asked if he had something for me to do. He said I will get back with you in a half hour.  Well it has been about 2 hours with nothing and I am still on the internet.  Before I went on the internet, I surfed the company website, typed an old presentation to make myself look busy - now there is nothing.

Like I said, I would really like to stay at this job as long as there is work to do most of the time.  Can anyone give me advise as to what to say to boss so that he understands that I am willing to do any type of work and would like to be busy and the fact that I would like to get hired, what is the status?

I hope I did not "talk" too long and made myself clear.

Thanks for your help

Susan

Tina,
Have you tried your local church?  Our church has a bi monthly meeting of job seekers where they talk about job openings in the area as well as ideas of good resume writing and interview skills.  I have also talked with people (and so has my husband on my behalf) in the store, at church, etc. and have found out about job opportunities.  Have you also tried going through some of the smaller agencies - sometimes I have had better luck (and sometimes better pay) with the smaller agencies as opposed to the larger ones.  Good luck with your search.

I worked for a company that also required that I have my company cell phone with me at all times during the day.  I only received one after hours call from my boss but it was urgent.  His son was sick so he needed to get home quickly and he needed to change his travel plans and needed my help.  My husband was annoyed that I had to stop what I was doing to help bossie but under the circumstances he understood.  I don't think I had a real problem with carrying around the cell phone since I always had it on my desk or in my purse or I carried it with me.  But..... I would never take it in the bathroom - I don't think there is any problem that could not wait 5 minutes (or however long it takes in there) to call the caller back.

I would definately quit my job but give some notice first.  Although I love it here, I would first get out of debt, go back to school to become a nurse (or something else in the medical field or maybe open my own daycare in my new house I would build) and work at a job that would make me happy.

Thanks for your comments. I lived in NJ until about 5 years ago and in NJ I worked as an executive assistant. I moved to Fl and had to get a job anywhere I could and as quickly as possible since money was fading. I got offered the job I was at for 4 years and liked it except for the fact there was no room for advancement and there was no way it would ever happen. I was getting to the point where I wanted and knew I could do more. I even had clients on the phone tell me they wished I was the person who was handling their claim. I had always kept my resume on all of the websites and got a call from my present employer stating that I would be able to get my insurance adjusters license and work as an adjuster and it would happen within a year. Well, within the year, I was able to go to school to get my license and obtained my license. I know that my boss only allowed me to get my license because a now former coworker (we worked together at former company also) pushed him in getting me into the next class. I was excited when I got my actual certificate and then the license. My boss on the other hand was not. My now former coworker left the company and now I have no support system and cannot get them to see that I would be a great adjuster.

I now think maybe I was not meant to be an adjuster and would like to go back to working as an assistant but cannot even get an interview.  I am very frustrated by all of this and know I can do better.

Now that I have my home computer back again, I am going to work on my resume and resubmit my resume on the online websites in hopes of getting noticed. I am also going to the library to find great cover letters which is something I think I am lacking in when I apply. I am also going to get my home business started which should get me the confidence back that I can do the work as an assistant so it can be shown through an interview.

Thanks for your help.
Susan

I haven't been on the site in quite some time but could really use your help.

I was working at a great job although there was no room for advancement and there were several problems with a coworker. I was given an opportunity to take a position that would give me an opportunity to advance within my career.

I have been in this new position for a little over a year now. I truly regret leaving my old company and they will not hire me back since I left and they felt there was a reason why I would leave after being there for 4 years. I would normally agree with this but in my case it was just that I was not being given a chance to move up just because my coworker who had been there longer then I was chose not to move up. This coworker would have had to get promoted before I could get promoted eventhough she made it clear she wanted to stay where she is until retirement in about seven years.

I am now in a position that was supposed to give me an opportunity to become an insurance adjuster (I am a claims assistant and had the same title at the old job). I obtained my license but now I am opening mail and answering phones and taking new insurance claim information. My old position I was busy all day long where I was doing work that was rewarding and I enjoyed what I was doing except that I was not given the opportunity to move on and was offered this new position. I am bored out of my mind.

I have been searching for a new job but have only had 2 or 3 phone calls with phone interviews or live interviews but never get an offer. I am really frustrated and want to go back to working as an administrative assistant which is my first love. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do this? I have gone to a couple of agencies but have not had any call backs and have applied directly to companies with the same no response.

I hope this all makes sense. Any questions let me know.

Thanks for your help.
Susan

9  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Help : new boss requires all emails printed! on: July 17, 2007, 04:08:37 pm
I agree that printing all emails would be a waste of time and paper. Before scheduling time to meet with boss to discuss his emails, I would first look at the emails and decide if there was anything I would be able to reply to without the boss looking at them, and if there are general emails I could handle such as meeting requests, requests for information I would be able to obtain, etc. The other emails, would be emails that I would print for boss to look at and give his reply.

Just a suggestion, good luck.

Yes, I always knew I wanted to work in an administrative assistant role (actually it was a secretarial role when I first started). I really enjoy working with others, getting to do new projects and learning from others. I have tried working in other fields twice now and have found that I always want to go back to my first love as an assistant. I just got my insurance adjusters license and am finding I really don't like working in the insurance industry in the manner I am working and want to go back - now!  I am finding not everyone is meant to do every job and like I tell my son you need to find something that makes you happy and go for it, no matter what the position is.

Thanks everyone. I am in the process of updating my resume as I have been sending out resume's that are not perfect - it is on a career website and I thought I had changed the information but obviously my changes did not stick.  It is changed now and hopefully I will get phone calls.  I need to also change my cover letter, does anyone have any suggestions of what to say - should it be long or short?

Hello,
I have not been on the website in quite some time but could really use your help. I am in a bad situation at work where another employee talks and treats me with disrespect and management will not believe me and do something about it.  I am ready to find a new position where I can use my administrative assistant skills.  Currently I work as a claims assistant and have my adjusters license but really enjoy working in an administrative assistant role. I am in the Orlando area of Florida and was wondering if any locals know of any employment opportunities in this area?  I have applied to lots of jobs on line with no luck - maybe it's my resume or maybe it's my cover letter.  Can anyone help?

My very first job was while I was in high school (won't say how long ago that was though).  I worked in the same office as my mom and she helped me get the position.  They were asking me to do things that I had never done and did not explain anything thinking since my mom worked there I would know everything.  Needless to say, I got fired from that job but that did not stop me from going after the job I wanted to do as an administrative assistant.  Every position that I have had since then I have learned a little more about being a "great" administrative professional and how to speak up for what I want and need and how to do the best job that I can no matter what is going on in my life - in other words not bringing home to work and work to home.

Hello,

I think I have seen this question before but was unable to find it using the search.  Does anyone in the US know of a website to look at to learn how to type?  My son is learning this year and is having difficulty so thought he could use a little help - not from me of course since I am just the mom and he is 13.

Thanks for your help

Thanks everyone for your help.  It is now a new week and now I have a new look at my job situation.  I have decided to stay with this new job for at least 3 months and see if things get any better or if I do not get more claims adjuster like work to do (which is what I was promised when interviewed).  I do however have my resume on 2 websites, will update them and if I get a call in the meantime for a job worth looking at, I will go for it.

I'll keep you all updated.
Susan
