Surely if that was part of your job your employer would have had to provide an adequate situation for you to either leave your desk or have a private room.
If my HR dept or any other member of staff here need to do something confidential related to work then they find a room to do it in. If it's work related I'm sure there was a workaround. Sounds a bit strange.
