sick sense of humor

We just received an e-mail sent out to everyone in the company from THE big bossie.  It was in reference to his second-in-command.



"This is to announce the immediate and unexpected retirement of Ms. Jane Doe, second-in-command.



Effective Monday, June 4, 2001, "Mrs. Jane Smith" will join us as the second-in-command.  



Please stop by the office to welcome her aboard."



So, of course, this promptly sets the whole place a-buzzin.  Everyone is calling and e-mailing everyone else to see what is going on, people are wondering if Jane Doe is ill or if there was a major row between the two and he fired her.



The actual scoop is that the whole thing is a hoax.  Jane Doe is getting married this weekend and will be coming in Monday as Jane Smith.



Apparently big bossie and Jane Doe concocted this scheme together and decided to sit back and watch everyone run around wondering what is happening.  This is their idea of humor.  Like a coworker said to me, the scariest thing is realizing that these are the two who are running this place!



Just had to vent!!

I actually think it's kinda funny!  See how fast the grapevine works, see how far out the rumor mill can get ... I think it would only work in a small company...

This isn't a really small company.  We have probably 400-500 employees and are a division of a much larger company.  This thing will probably be going on for days because there will be people who are away and won't even see the message until next week.  I don't know - maybe I'm just an old stick-in-the-mud.  It just seems like such a colossal waste of time.  Considering these people are huge penny pinchers, I just don't get it.  I am definitely a firm believer in having a laugh at work, but something that involves the whole company??

I thought it was rather funny, myself....  and I think even funnier would be to watch all the people who got a bee in their bonnet over it.

Cute (maybe) for a small "everybody-knows-everybody's-business" situation. but in a large company this could really cause a mess, especially if you have a lot of people who *enjoy* a crisis.

Well your bossie was obviously trying to be "cute" --groan, laugh or giggle, it was a bomb!  



What is that saying about what happens when people assume?? The results can be really amusing--or disastrous!
