That was really interesting.

I agree with the woman talking about working at Westminster - a friend of mine worked there for 20 years, and when she left was soooo bored.  She has now moved back to Edinburgh and works for the Scottish Parliament instead!

Peana

I start at the Scottish Parly next week working for an independent MSP - Scottish Politics are quite interesting!

Anyway I digress.  Have just managed to listen to your piece Andrea - or should that be Ondrea?!  (although she changed her pronunciation of your name right at the end, how odd!)

Though good, the Westminster woman got the lion's share of i (loved her comments about Matthew Paris, can identify with that, although I'm not sure I would have mentioned names particularly as he's still very much alive!)

As for saying Betty Boothroyd (and women in general) was organised - I seem to remember that Miss Boothroyd once worked in an office (as well as that stage career) - or am I havering cos of tiredness?  If she did, what a lost opportunity to say that was WHY she was so organised!!!

I don't know about everyone else, but in a thing like this, you finish listening feeling that you didn't quite get to the jam in the middle, if you know what I mean.  In fact, I think the piece was altogether too short to cover two topics - they should have maybe just stuck to one.

I agree that her remarks about the computer were a bit odd.  She wouldn't manage the workload she undoubtedly has without one and in that aspect, this first waver couldn't manage without her PC and laptop and email and every other bit of technical advancement - in fact I love it all!

I do agree that working there is an interesting job, but I found it truly disconcerting that the other woman (Eileen was it?)a.  demeaned her employer by talking about how he never knew where he was going and generally speaking about him like he was some imbecile who would not survive without her, and
b.  all of her "stories" were her stories not having anything to do with the profession as a whole. In fact, I doubt she's given a single bit of consideration to any other professional but herself in many a year.

Further, her comment about computers having "spoilt us all" was pure rubbish, computers have enhanced us as a profession and given us value far above the typist mentality that this woman seemed to embrace with such gusto.  Whether you are a career secretary or not, I think that's a poor example of one and certainly though her career has been distinguished, she should not be speaking for all of us.

Reprehensible.

I think she was just excited it was national radio after all, agree about the employer bits hadn't actually thought about it that way.  It was hard to get a word it, I'm, bummed cause I didn't get to plug the International Summit Sad but time ran out before we could get to it.

Also agree with Jackie, waaaay too much topic for the time allowed.

Being at the BBC was cool though. Smiley

Hey Andrea, I'm doing news for our Edinburgh RSL again this summer (starting 3-30 August) and have been promised a weekend show.  Wanna come up and be on a local station?Huh

This year's studio is based on a university campus.  Bit of a change from a 5* hotel but we need to be high up so we can put the transmitter on the roof and get as much coverage with our pathetic few watts allowed by the Radio Authority as we can.  Roll on the licence being granted cos then we'll have more power, and a real base!
