Getting caught in a lie...

The story of the admin caught interviewing when she had called in sick reminds me of an incident in my husband's office. One of the girls in the office called in on a nice spring day and said that her father had had a heart attack and she had to go to the hospital to be with him. Naturally everyone was understanding, and said to take whatever time she needed, etc.

Well, lo and behold around lunchtime that day, who should RIDE HIS BICYCLE up to the front door and stop in to see if his daughter would like to go to lunch as a nice treat? The miraculously cured father who didn't know he was being used as an excuse for his daughter's absence!!!

When she showed up for work the next day, she was promptly fired (after they asked her how her father was doing).  It was quite the buzz around the office!

OUCH!!!   That I can see firing someone over.  

I've found it is so much simpler to just ask for a day off when I need or want one than it is to call in sick.  There has only been one time I was asked to wait to time I had asked for and that was because they had just fired our controller and my absence would have dumped three jobs onto my co-worker.  

I work and live in small town.  It wouldn't pay for me to fib just to get a day off.

Note to self.  ALWAYS make sure the person you're usuing as an excuse KNOWS they're an excuse.  Sounds like something that would happen to me....which is why I don't do things like that.

I always wonder about the people who lie like that.  Someone some time ago posted a story about someone who said that her mother died in order to get the day off.  Then this woman AND her mother were spotted in the grocery store the very same day.  Even if she didn't get caught, what would she have said to get the day of when her mother REALLY dies?

Nothing better than truth and honesty but the Murphy's Law is right for such occasions "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."

I have always had a problem lying - I am so bad at it, I just don't bother.  When I go for interviews I have to take holiday - then I don't have to think of a reason.

It does make me somewhat gulilble!  I tend to believe what people tell me, because it doesn't occur to me they might not be telling the truth.

When I was young I used to get into trouble for being tactless - but when people asked me a question, they used to get the honest answer!!

Of course, with age comes wisdom, and the lesson that if people don't want to hear the truth, sometimes it's best not to say anything at all.

But it irritates me.  I really don't understand why people feel the need to lie.  Why not be honest with each other?  It makes life much easier.
