Listening is not a passive affair, it requires energy and effort. If you are ill or tired you won’t be able listen effectively. One big factor in careless listening is lack of incentive. So, in order to listen effectively, you must feel convinced that what you are about to hear is personally relevant. Adopt a “What's in it for me?” attitude to all that you hear. Then, when something valuable is being said, you won't miss it.
