If you Read Between The Lines you find the real message hidden away in a situation in which it's not at first obvious. The expression's origin lies with cryptography and early attempts at passing coded messages. One system of secret writing was to put the real message on alternate lines and lace an unrelated story on to the other lines. By reading the whole thing the reader would just read a simple story or letter, but on reading the alternate lines the hidden message be decoded.
