To Go Dutch means a man expects a woman guest to pay for herself. This is fine these days but was not the behaviour of an English gentleman 400 years ago - the inference being that it was normal for a Dutchman. In the 1500s, the Dutch were both military and trading rivals of England. It was very common for the English to refer to the Dutch in derisory fashion and a surprising number of the phrases continue to be used nearly 400 years later.
