Crocodiles, after eating, shed excess salt from glands situated just beneath each eye, which gives the impression of tears. So, according to ancient Egyptian legend, after the crocodile had devoured its victim it would immediately seem to be crying with remorse. The Egyptians coined the phrase and applied it to double-dealing people who showed insincerity or false sorrow for their actions.
