Sound Off!
PAs tell it like it really is

Sound Off! Technology is a great working boon, but can also be the source of major gripes at work. This issue we hear from a secretary who would rather remain anonymous, as her particular rant is aimed directly at her boss! So, see what you think of our Mystery Voice's views. She's got quite a lot to get off her chest, by the sounds of it!

It's about my boss. He drives me bananas. He thinks he's a real IT whizz but he's not - in fact, he's quite useless. But he won't accept that he's useless and just let me get on with it for him. It wouldn't matter if he didn't want to get involved in the techie side of things, but he insists on meddling. That means things fall between the two of us, but I end up carrying the can - and sometimes he even drops me in it in public!

Take for example, with his new notebook with WiFi capability. Although he loves gadgets, he can't be bothered to learn to programme them. He loves the idea of using Hot Zones and downloading emails, etc, wirelessly, but hates the idea of learning how to set it all up. So I do it for him.

A couple of days ago, I overheard a conversation in his office which was obviously about an important email that seemed to have gone astray. I didn't see it in the office, so I'm prepared to bet that he picked it up on his notebook while he was out, didn't download it to the main system, and then deleted it (which he often does).

But get this - I then heard him say to the Finance Director, "Thing is Jeff, I can't get my PA to get a grip on these types of things. It's not the first time she's lost an important email. I'll talk to her about it."

I was livid!! It's bad enough that he pretends to the whole organisation that he's some kind of techie wizard, when actually it's me doing it all for him. But to have him then blame me for his incompetence was too much!

I'm know I'm going to have to have it out with him, somehow, but it's been going on for so long that if I expose him, it will seriously undermine him in the company, and make me look disloyal. It's very tricky, but I'm furious about it!

Hmmm! Looks like our Mystery Voice has got quite a problem! What do you think? Vote now!

She needs to sort that out with her boss right away, as his comments could affect her career!

There's no point causing a fuss. That's what supporting directors behind the scenes is all about.

It's her own fault for letting herself get into that position. She'll have to live with it.

What you thought of Amina Khan's tirade in the last issue!

Remember the Sound Off in the last issue? Amina Khan was furious that the skills and experience of today's administrators are not reflected in their pay packets, and she believes this is also an issue about gender. We asked you to vote, and here's what you thought of Amina's views:

Your Vote A:

Yes she's right, the pay for PAs is far too low

75%

Your Vote B:

I sympathise but my salary is pretty good

19%

Your Vote C:

No, can't agree. We'd all like to earn more but we have to be realistic

6%

And to send your Sound Off! to us, just email to express@deskdemon.com. Send us no more than 300 words, your name and firm (or remain anonymous) and we'll pick the best to publish.

Next issue the theme is all about business travel. Give us an idea what makes your blood boil about organising trips for business execs!

Look forward to hearing from you before 30 June!
