Kerry is really missing her mate, Janie, who has set out to explore the world. The lovely letter (complete with sand in the envelope!) and photos of her laughing on the beach just make her seem even further away. Should Kerry finish her weekly report, or pen a quick reply to her travelling work buddy? Hmmm... Tough call. She grabs a notepad...

Dear ReadersSecretarial Newsletter Editor Penny Cottee
How are you all? No doubt, you're already well into the new year, busily keeping the wheels of industry turning. One thing you're going to be involved in at one time or another over the next 12 months is conferences, meetings and events. Whether you plan them, attend them, or speak at them - conferences and meetings come with the territory.
That's why we've devoted this issue to the subject. If you're getting involved in the virtual world, you'll find Janice Pearson's excellent advice on facilitating online meetings very useful. And if you ever book hotel conference suites or party venues, you must read our feature on what to look out for. Industry research shows that too many event organisers walk into legal contracts with their eyes firmly closed - and can suffer serious consequences. Don't be one of them! Read our industry-approved guidance, and keep on the right side of the law!
Increasingly, office professionals are running their own meetings, and not simply being invited in to take the minutes. Our fun quiz on how to run a meeting will hopefully give you a smile, while offering the chance to check your chairing etiquette.
Next issue, out at the end of February, we'll be taking a look at training matters - how to make the most of training, deciding what you need, checking out some online provision, and telling you how to make a cast-iron business case your boss can't possibly refuse.
As ever, we're always pleased to hear your views and comments - as well as an idea of the issues you'd like to see covered in future issues of ON! Just email me at newsletter@deskdemon.com
With best wishes

Penny Cottee
