Research -Management Support Forum

Management Support Forum UK currently focuses on re-defining management support as a profession. Over the past decade the role of management support staff has changed dramatically. A wide variety of job titles now makes it difficult to recognise management support staff as a single group with common interests. Is there still a clearly definable management support profession? If so, how do we sell management support as an attractive career option to current and future generations?

The Forum intends to carry out research to supports its activities. A wide cross-section of support staff will be asked such questions as:

  • why they don't feel part of a profession now

  • what they think a profession is

  • why they are not taking qualifications

  • why they don't join networks and associations

  • what appeals to them about other professions that they feel theirs lack

  • how they view their jobs
Equally, managers will be approached to establish what they need from support staff, how important qualifications are to them, their perceptions of whether standards are begin met etc.

Campaign
Management Support Forum UK hopes to mount a co-ordinated campaign to:

  • make 2002 the year of the real secretary or professional secretary

  • reach the people can make a difference (the Government, influencers, other members of the profession etc) by:
    • publishing articles in management media such as Management Today, Business Age and television and radio

    • working with DeskDemon to promote the profession through training, competitions and promotions, such as asking visitors to the website to contribute their ideas on issues discussed at Forum meetings

    • lobbying the Government, employer organisations, the media
  • provide opportunities for CPD

  • decide where we want to be in 2002 or 2003
