Dear ReadersPenny Cottee Secretarial newsletter editor
I have a bone to pick with you! When it comes to the issue of training, you're just not taking the initiative! In preparing this edition of ON!, I've been comparing notes with secretaries, PAs and admins, and I have been struck by how many times I've heard these refrains: "Secretaries don't get training in our firm," and "I haven't had any training for years", or "All budgets have been cut". Well, you may not like me for saying this, but if you haven't had any training for years, it could be partly your fault!
FEATURES
Who organises your training for you? Do you wait for your firm to do it? Is it your manager who decides on your future development? Or is it you? If you're not firmly involved in your own future, you can't expect anyone else to be, says Helen Vandevelde. Here she explains how to take control of your career, by building your own skills and training plan
In the good old days, a secretary was someone who took notes, did a lot of typing, and fielded calls for the boss. You don't find so many of those any more! Today's PAs juggle a host of responsibilities. But has secretarial training kept pace with this workplace shift? We asked business journalist Roisin Woolnough to investigate
If your desire for professional training has been thwarted by your firm's ultra-tight hold on the purse-strings, don't despair! Take a look around you and you'll find excellent opportunities for boosting your skills - many of which are free. Workplace journalist Ian Boughton shows you where to start looking

Asking for money is never easy - especially from the boss! But there's a right way to do it, and a wrong way. We asked senior PA Ann Nuckley to let us in on her secrets of success. After all, she persuaded employers to fund a university degree course for her!
Training can play a key part in your career and if you have a training budget in these belt-tightening times, you're lucky. But do you make the most of it? Do you return to your daily work after an off-site course inspired, efficient and invigorated? Or do you dread returning to a desk filled with urgent messages, tasks undone, and an over-flowing in-tray? Here are some tips to help you give training the space it needs to maximise your learning potential.
How often do you finish a training course, and find that the information - though interesting - just hasn't gone in? And how about a week later - do you remember anything? If that's the case, it could be you're not engaging your mind to embrace your learning experience. Author and learning strategist Bill Lucas reveals his three-step plan to learning success.

So many learning techniques exist, but how do you know what's right for you? Business journalist Sara Goodwins asked five office professionals to spill the beans about their training choices. Here's what they had to say…
Exclusive to ON! subscribers, we have TWO FREE TRAINING PLACES to give away to lucky winners in our free prize draw. We have linked up with two top training providers - Hawksmere and Spearhead Training Group - to give you the chance to win free training courses worth over £500
