How to Work With Multiple Bosses
Share/Save/Bookmark

  1. Establish the chain of command. Usually the highest ranked boss will be at the top of the priority list and the others will follow.
  2. Know styles: Get to know the personalities and management style of the people you will be supporting. Some personalities may include:
    1. Laid back and casual;
    2. Perfectionist;
    3. Demanding;
    4. Always drops last minute projects;
    5. Egotistical.
  3. Understand goals: Understand the business goals of your organisation or department. Know what all the managers' goals are, as well as how these goals contribute to the company's success.
  4. Discuss: Sit down with each boss regularly and discuss their projects - both current and upcoming. Encourage your boss to give you ample time to finish projects to minimise scheduling conflicts.
  5. Listen to your bosses. Listen and really understand their projects and demands. This will help you gauge the importance of the projects you receive and help you prioritise the importance.
  6. Explain: When you have a conflict with projects, explain to each manager your workload. If you are unable to prioritise which project to do, let the managers decide. Will one of the projects affect the bottom line or reputation of the company?
  7. Keep everyone informed: When you have a system that works for you, make sure everyone know how it works: how projects are given, how they will be worked on and when an issue does arise how it will be handled.
