Sleep Tight
If you Sleep Tight you sleep well - have a good night's rest. The word "tight" in this context is commonly thought to be about pulling bedclothes tightly around ourselves. In actual fact though the origin's slightly different. The first mass-produced beds in England were made with straw mattresses held by criss-crossed ropes attached to the bed frames. After a time the ropes would slacken off and so the mattress would become uncomfortable. Because of this, all beds were sold with an iron tool that was used to wind the ropes tighter when they got too loose. So, to suggest a person "sleeps tight" was to prompt them to tighten their mattress ropes so they'd have a more comfortable bed for their night's sleep.
