Listed below are 5 mistakes to avoid when using social media. By avoiding these items, you will be able to drive more traffic to your website, expand your business globally, increase your sales, and generate more profits.

1. Setting up a social media profile, but not using it.Have you ever set up a social media account, and then didn't use it for months? Don't worry - I've done it too. I think we all have. In order to create credibility and consistency with your potential customers, commit to being on your social media sites at least 30 minutes per day. If you communicate and post regularly on these sites, then you will begin to create a buzz. As you post consistently, people begin to count on and expect your content. Potential customers can't count on you if you're sporadic. Also, if you stop responding and communicating all together, then you could be perceived as unreliable, and people will stop coming to your site.

2. Pushing products all the time. This is a huge mistake that many marketers make. Many marketers promote, promote, promote, all the time. However, remember that people want to get to know you as a person before they do business with you. Consumers do business with people they like and trust, and you can establish that likeability and trust by providing value (information people can apply to their lives) 90% of the time and posting information on your products and services only 10% of the time. This is the 90/10 formula for successful online marketing.

"Be There Before The Sale"

Be there for others. Share valuable information that's uplifting, empowering, helpful and applicable.

Zig Ziglar said, "If you help enough people get what they want, you will always have what you want."

Remember - When you've done well for others, you will do well for yourself and make money.

3. Only connecting with friends and family members. This is another huge mistake that a lot of people make. They only connect with their friends & family members. However, if you're using social media to drive more traffic to your website, generate more prospects/clients, expand your business globally, or to generate more profits, then connecting with your target market is a MUST.
By connecting with your target market, you're connecting with people who are interested in your products & services. So, now when you post something to your social media profiles, it's going out to prospects and potential clients who are interested in what you have to offer.

Remember that over 500 million people are using Facebook. So your target market is definitely using social media. Always remember to make genuine connections & build relationships with your target market. Remember the 90/10 rule. Provide value 90% of the time and only provide information on your products/services 10% of the time. It's all about giving, caring, and sharing (it's not about pushing products all the time).

4. Not having a plan.A big reason why some businesses fail is due to lack of planning. Your business plan will help clarify your focus and create a crystal clear vision for your business. A business plan includes a "plan of action" detailing how you're going to accomplish your goals. It also offers a benchmark by which actual performance can be measured and reviewed. Take some time and write out a social media "plan of action" including the following:

a. Who are you going to connect with (your target market, for example)?
b. How are you going to make a real, genuine connection with others? How are you going to establish likeability and trust?
c. How are you going to brand yourself?
d. What type of content are you going to post?
e. How often are you going to post the content?

5. Not tracking your progress.Track your progress, so you can determine how much income you generate per blog post. Link your blog up to all of your social media accounts. So, when you make a blog post, it automatically goes out to all of your social media profiles with just 1 click. If you are connected with hundreds or even thousands of people in your target market, imagine the possibilities of creating just 1 blog post.

1 blog post could easily translate into $100 or thousands of dollars from your loyal followers.

The wonderful thing about the internet is that you can measure your progress. You can add software to your website that will tell you how many people are coming to your website everyday and where they are coming from. So, you can see exactly how much traffic you're getting from Facebook, Twitter, and other sites.

With billboards for example, there's no way to determine how many people actually drove by the sign and viewed it. Your website statistics are easily measurable. Remember - anything that can be measured can be monetized (in other words, if it can be measured, it's easily transferrable into financial currency).

Many people start using social media, but then they stop using it because they're not seeing the results they had hoped. By using the techniques described above, you can create a plan of action, track your results and monetize your passion
