I think annual performance reviews are a good thing.  If anything, they document what you've done the past year, and you've got that on record.  Where I work, the employee drafts up their PA and the boss revises it or adds to it.  



So far (I've been here 3+ years), I've had three good performance reviews and got a promotion and more $$$, so I think I'm heading in the right direction!
