Title: What search Browser do you use?
Post by: susans on November 06, 2006, 06:16:20 am
Is Google king of the search engines?  What search engine do you use?  I actually do use Google most of the the time, are there others out there that people use?

Whatever comes up when I click on search - my new company have very strict IT policy - only those who require internet for their jobs have it.

That would be Google ... it's now a verb, isn't it?  "To google x y or z?"!!!

Without a doubt...Google!

According to Wikipedia...

Google is the most used search engine on the web with a 54% market share, ahead of Yahoo! (23%) and MSN (13%).  However, independent estimates from popular sites indicate that more than 80% of search referrals come from Google, with Yahoo! a distant second and MSN occupying barely 5%.  The Google search engine receives about a billion search requests per day.

Alert!

Did you know you are not allowed "to google" something?  You should be performing a google search? I read that somewhere but cannot remember the specifics.  Apparently Google were getting upset at people reportedly google-bashing!

Diddums.

They should be pleased, Jess.  "To Google" is like "To hoover".  After all, who would say "I'm just going to MSN". Or "to Yahoo" for that matter!  I seem to remember that The Yahoos are mentioned in that book about Liliputians and other folks.  Hehehe.

Follow the birdie!  It may remind you even though it was in 2003.

Practically always it's Google.

Occassionally.. .I'll got to ask.com if google isn't helpful.

Google opened up a 'branch' (for lack of a better word) here in SE Michigan... keep checking for when they do their hiring (last time we checked it was strictly HR positions - so that they'd be able to hire the rest ofwho they need).

Google is NOT pleased to have it's name turned into a verb - that is how companies lose their trademark. They MUST zealously protect it in order to maintain it (see the woes of kleenex, bandaid, xerox, etc. to better understand!)

I primarily use Yahoo, though it depends. I often use unique search engines depending on what I am searching for (i.e. first.gov for government information for example).

Quite so,  Marie, but it's generally a little difficult to legislate about words that people may, or may not use.

Additionally, language is a living thing, and therefore is developed by the people who use it.

I also use Google.  I've found that many, many search engines are powered by Google now so its just as simple to set that as my home page (customized with news, etc.) as it is to use any other.

I've tried them all; Google, Yahoo, MSN.  I find that I like Yahoo the best.

Google always brought up the same results as I got with Google, and MSN didn't seem to provide the sources I was looking for.

I have also found good stuff in Altavista and Annanova plus a few others in the past which I had saved at my last but one job so never bothered to remember their proper names.

Also the BBC search engine is quite good on some things.
