Title: Will the new overtime rules effect you?

With the new overtime rules having been published in the US ( Effective in August) what, if any, effect will they have on your paycheck? I stand to lose my overtime pay dependent upon how HR interprets the language.

Must admit that I haven't heard anything on those... what are the main changes, or where can I go to find them? I know Congress is looking at passing a bill that will positively affect my pay when traveling for the goverment, and some other options, but hadn't heard anything outside of government workers.

I have not heard about this. Please tell more - or where can I read this.
My company has a rule that you should arrive about 10 minutes early each day in order to get the computer going and start working before you are supposed to be in. We never get paid for overtime unless of course it was some critical. It should be interesting when they have to actually pay us for this time.

Well, it appears that my position will be exempt from these overtime rules... so guess it won't affect me any more than it does already, since we don't tend to earn OT anyway. Was worth looking in to though. Thanks for sharing the link.

It only takes a couple of minutes to start the computer but they require us to be in the office about 10 minutes before. I was arriving on time or no more then 1 minute late and I was put on probabation and had to change my hours to a lot of this time. I now arrive at or about 8:30 each day which means, I should be getting 15 minutes of overtime each day but they do not see it that way and if I needed to take 15 minutes extra at lunch or leave 15 minutes early, I would have to take personal time or make it up (which does not include that time before coming in).
This rule and the lack of consistent rules/regulations is making that I want to leave and find another position. I will have my updated resume out there this weekend and have sent it to different positons but am waiting for some calls.

Oof. That's not good.
I operate on a policy of 'if you watch me in, I'll watch me out'. We work flexi-time and they get the time back in spades because I enjoy my job and don't have to struggle to accomodate the rest of my life.

It's even worse at the photography co. where my housemate works. He often works Friday or Saturday evenings, and I know that sometimes his hours have to go over 40 in a week, yet he never gets paid overtime. He also does not take a lunch break, even though I frequently remind him that by LAW they have to give him at LEAST a 1/2 hour break every day when he works 8 hours. He used to spend his "breaks" moving his car because there was no place to park except for on the street, where you could only park for 2 hours without getting a (strictly-enforced) ticket! I think it should be the company's lookout to make sure its employees have adequate parking. (Recently, one of the bosses moved to a place two blocks away, so now they can park there.) Overall, I think he's being given the shaft, and we're on the lookout for a better job for him!
