Title: Start the day motivator
Post by: Jackie G on June 27, 2012, 09:17:27 am
Kind of linked, but different, to the topic about how to stay focused in the office, what motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?

Is it that first cup of coffee, the lovely warm water of the shower, the thought of an exciting day's work ahead?

Or do you lie in bed till the last possible minute when you absolutely HAVE to get up and then dash about madly getting everything ready and yet still arriving at work on time?

For me, it's mostly the latter - I know, I know, I should do better.  Although if it's nice and sunny outside, I do have an easier time of getting up.  Once I'm up and started, I'm fine, it's just getting out of bed, especially in the winter...

As I wonder in 10 minutes late, I'd have to say it's the latter.   ;D  Luckily we have flex time, so I'm not really late, just personally.  I just could not get out of bed, or get moving, this morning.  At the last possible moment I got up, and rushed myself and two kidlets through our morning routine, and then had hubby take them to daycare so I wasn't even later.  Gotta admit, I am not a morning person, would rather laze about in bed till I leisurely get up and start moving around (would love that to be around 9:30-10:00am), but would balance that by staying up till midnight/1am.  However, the kids are generally early risers and I have an 8-5 job, so don't get to do what I'd like.  But when I do... man do I feel good.  And no amount of coffee or caffeine can get me moving faster in the a.m., done tried all of that!  :)

It is sooooo nice out here today but I still found it hard to get moving this morning as well.  Most of the time I'm ok but managed to be here early before 8 am and that was a good thing.  It's getting better as the day wears and the morning shift winds down.  This afternoon will be interesting with a vendor to come in to chat with and their boss, so it should be a productive afternoon, I hope.  But it was very hard to get up and moving.  What usually motivates me to get up early this time of year though is my pumpkin patch, I have things I HAVE to do prior to work because I'm not home to babysit them all day long like I would like too.  When the pumpkins start that really is necessary to check them daily.  In the Fall I have a hard time getting up because it is soooo dark and the cooler temps make it even harder....hope everyone is having an awesome day.

Oddly enough, I am a morning person. I am up around 5 every day, even the weekends. However, I then proceed to try to get all sorts of things done (emails, writing, gardening, cleaning, etc.) so invariably I am late for work by 5-10 minutes.

My husband has told me in the past I wake up irritatingly cheerful in the mornings. LOL When I wake up, I am wide awake, no grogginess here. Don't drink coffee so nothing needed on that side.

I'm also a night owl.

It's the afternoons that I struggle with.

I am not a morning person either and used to be a night owl but now I have to get up in the mornings(!) am no longer that!

I should have said we also have flexi, so like Countrigal, it's not late per se, but just me.  Also my boss doesn't really understand the concept of flexi as he's above all that.  It is really useful though if stuck in traffic etc to be a little 'late' and it not really matter, unless of course you're in negative flexi time which I try never to be!

Just realised that I've done 8hr+ at work today (I usually only take 30 mins for lunch to build up my flexi) as we had a meeting which went on and on.  This on top of a board meeting tomorrow night means two late nights in the office - yuck

Oh, I would love to be able to lie in bed and listen to the radio for a bit after the alarm has gone off but unfortunately as soon as I switch my alarm clock off my furry little alarm (cat) starts, closely followed by the big alarm (dog) and so I'm dragged reluctantly out of bed to feed one and take the other for a walk ;D. I don't mind it in the summer months (when we get them) as it's nice walking in the early morning sunshine but it can get a bit of a drag in the winter months when it's cold and nasty - however I do get to find out whether I need to leave slightly earlier for work to de-ice the car!!

This reminds me of a question I had in a 2nd round interview last year - "What gets you going in the morning"  - I responded with an immediate "the alarm clock" - needless to say I didn't get the job!  :-[
Normally, I wake up to the alarm clock, if my hubbie is around he has it set early as he leaves/finishes earlier than me and I choose to get up with him as it's the best part of the day for us to get some quality time together.  We make and have breakfast together, chat etc before he leaves.  If he's away on businesss I admit to having an extra hour in bed and then often have to rush before I need to go out.
A cup of nice coffee also helps.

I love the weekends when I don't have to put the alarm clock on, but during the week that "beep-beep" definitely wakes me up.

What gets me up in the morning?  How many days it is to salary day.  ;D  Seriously, I love my job.  It is very demanding, but I enjoy it.  Then there's that morning shower, breakfast, my first cup of tea, and a little trip to the garden to put out food for the birds.

Travelling on the Tube, here in London, is a cultural experience like no other and has an etiquette of its own.  Still, it's a good place to read the newspaper, read a book or have a little snooze, plan my grocery list, plan the day ahead.

So, by the time I reach my lovely office, I am ready to do battle.

I know I'm chiming in late here....(how ironic is that!)

For me, it's the shower.  I'm a morning shower person mainly because I have fine, thin, oily hair that must be washed every day.  (It's like an angel food cake - the slightest bit of grease and it falls flat.)  But I've come to enjoy those four minutes in the shower.  Part of it is the soothing sound of the water itself.  I turn the showerhead to the "pulse" setting and use it to work out the kinks in my back.  In the winter, the warm water helps me warm up (house gets chilly overnight) and in the summer, a shower on the cool side of tepid is refreshing.  It's kind of like starting the day with a massage, which is good because my one-hour plus commute -- half on a jammed interstate and half through a congested city -- can be enough to ruin a day sometimes.
