It looks like our trip to Ireland is moving forward, going in the next week or so (don't want to give exact dates on an internet site!)
Landing in Shannon and touring west coast for a few days, Belfast area for a day (Titanic!) then down to Dublin, Kilkenny and back to Shannon.  We will have a rental car.  Titanic, Giants Causeway and other natural sites with a stop in Sligo (co-worker's brother's bar small world!) are on my list.

I’m thinking of flying by the seat of my pants and not booking hotels for every night, just in the bigger cities for ease of airport and stay at bed and breakfast inns the other nights.  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

If you could only see one or two castles or churches which would it be?

One or two best natural attractions?

I’ve been told the Waterford Crystal Tour isn’t worth it – thoughts?

Any other suggestions or sites/sights to see?

PS we have both decided to bypass the Blarney stone!
Thanks in advance

Sounds fabulous!  Check out Inroads Ireland Tours on FB.  Great site with nice travel ideas for Ireland.  I hope to get there one day.  Safe travels!

I too heard the Waterford tour is not worth it.  We had a group trip there a few years ago and several in the group were disappointed.

Atlanta,

I hope you have a wonderful trip!  Please check out this website www.discoverireland.com and can I advise you to book your tickets to the Titanic event in advance.  You can do it online at this link www.titanicbelfast.com

You will find info on castles and churches in this link -
www.discoverireland.com/gb/ireland-things-to-see-and-do/culture-and-sights/history-and-heritage/castles/?WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=gb_ga_010112_GBGoogleAdwords_TI_GB_B_Places_of_Interest_Broad

If you are up in the North West you may want to do a tour of the Bushmills Distillery www.bushmills.com

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Atlanta,

One thing to remember if you already have dates booked for your trip is....12 and 13 July is our national holiday in Northern Ireland.  There may be band parades in various towns so traffic could be affected.  Many business and shops close for a week or more but there should still be plenty to see and do.

I would also keep an eye on the weather before you travel but do pack sensible shoes and something for the rain.  Better to be prepared!

Oh the joys of stand by travel.  Well we can get there but flights are already negative numbers to get home traveling through Shannon.  May have to revamp and try Dublin with a few hops in between.  Right now it doesn't look good.  But I'm not complaining every paying passenger on Delta Air Lines is contributing to my upkeep!  We always have a plan b and c
B is Seattle to San Fran drive the coast which I have never done - hubby has
C is Colorado where I used to live a lifetime ago and LOVED, hubby has not seen the sights.  I laughed at this one I could take him to the cave I got married in the first time - no wonder that marrigage ended up on the rocks! ( ba dump!)

I haven't given up on Ireland yet - it's first choice and if I can find a way home....

Sounds like a wonderful adventure is to be had!

Re not booking hotac ahead of your trip. I have done that quite a few times and sometimes it has worked out well and other times... However I did do it in Ireland some years ago and stayed with the most fabulous people in B&Bs, small hotels etc - no one place was the same - I could write a book about it. So I would say go for it, but just check out beforehand if there are any big events ie music festival, golfing event etc - that could scupper your plans.

No go on Ireland - we would still be waiting for a flight home!
We went to Stuttgart, Germany and toured Mercedes and Porsche museums, spent a few afternoons in a beer garden, wandered the city.  I should walk more I always come home a few pounds lighter after crossing the pond, even with German chocolate! On the plus side we got first class both ways, have I mentioned I love my hubby!
Only down side was the plant we wanted to tour was closed to tours for holiday.  I'm thinking of the July 4th week to try again, a quick trip in and out just to tour the Mercedes Benz plant.

You mean for a direct flight or via London?

Our airline of choice goes direct to Dublin or through JFK for Shannon.  Neither city was a viable option.

Ah so there were other options.  I thought you meant every airline was full!
